The Testaments season 2: Release date speculation and latest news

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Testaments season 1.*

It’s always challenging to follow a popular series like The Handmaid’s Tale, but The Testaments has succeeded in forging its own unique dystopian path. It doesn’t shy away from offering a fresh perspective and even subtly reimagines elements of Margaret Atwood’s original novel.

The first season of this coming-of-age story focuses on Agnes and Daisy, who meet at Aunt Lydia’s academy and immediately distrust each other. We soon learn Daisy is secretly on a mission for Mayday, sent into Gilead by June after her parents were killed in Canada.

Agnes is living a seemingly idyllic life in Gilead, but as she gets older, everyone starts talking about who she will marry – likely an older Commander. The first season ended with a mix of sadness and hope, as it became clear that Daisy is determined to convince other members of her group, the Plums, to join her cause, though her actions could be risky.

Now that The Testaments has been renewed for a second season, viewers are eager to find out when it will premiere. Here’s a rundown of the latest information.

The Testaments season 2 release date speculation

As a big fan of The Testaments, I was so relieved to hear it was getting a second season! The news came just a week before the first season ended, which was a huge weight off everyone’s shoulders.

We don’t have a release date for season two yet. However, some fans believe production might start soon, as the show’s creator originally intended for it to run for three to five seasons.

The Handmaid’s Tale originally released new seasons annually for its first three years. Season four arrived in 2021, followed by season five in 2022, and the final sixth season in 2025 – though its release was delayed due to industry strikes.

If the second season of The Testaments follows the pattern of the first, we might see it released around 2027. Stay tuned for updates!

The Testaments season 2 cast speculation: Who could be returning?

The way the first season ended, with Agnes, Daisy, and Shunammite (Rowan Blanchard) featured prominently, strongly suggests they’ll be central characters in season two.

Most of the actors from season one are likely to return, as their characters’ storylines aren’t finished. While Becka’s (Mattea Conforti) story ended sadly, the show has already made changes to the original book, leaving room for her character to reappear in season two.

Even though Agnes broke off her engagement with Commander Weston, it’s probable he’ll reappear searching for a new wife – a prospect that feels especially unsettling now that we know he has a history of abuse. The same goes for Commander Judd (Charlie Carrick), who appears to be distancing himself from Aunt Lydia and seems to be at the center of everything.

The Grove parents won’t be appearing in future episodes, though we might see them in flashbacks. Dr. Grove was killed by Becka, and to protect her daughter from consequences, Becka’s mother took the blame for the crime and received a death sentence.

The cast members we’d expect to return for The Testaments season 2 are as follows.

  • Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
  • Chase Infiniti as Agnes
  • Lucy Halliday as Daisy
  • Rowan Blanchard as Shunammite
  • Mattea Conforti as Becka
  • Mabel Li as Aunt Vidala
  • Amy Seimetz as Paula
  • Nate Corddry as Commander MacKenzie
  • Brad Alexander as Garth
  • Zarrin Darnell-Martin as Aunt Gabbana
  • Eva Foote as Aunt Estee
  • Isolde Ardies as Hulda
  • Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba
  • Birva Pandya as Miriam
  • Kira Guloien as Rosa
  • Charlie Carrick as Commander Judd
  • Reed Diamond as Commander Weston

We anticipate seeing Elisabeth Moss return as June Osbourne in future episodes of The Testaments. O-T Fagbenle, who played Luke in The Handmaid’s Tale, has hinted that he’s also been in talks about making a guest appearance in The Testaments.

What could The Testaments season 2 be about?

Now that Agnes’s engagement is over, she’s back at Aunt Lydia’s school in a very unusual situation as a returning student. She’ll be starting the program over again as a Green, while the Aunts search for a new husband for her.

If there’s a time jump, we’ll probably see Agnes go through the ball and engagement process again, this time with Daisy and Shu supporting her. Daisy starting her period means she’s becoming more and more involved in the life Gilead expects of her, despite secretly working with Mayday. Shu hasn’t started her period yet, so she’s still considered a Plum, but that could change in the next season.

Fans are still curious about Shu and her important position in Gilead, especially now that we know her brother was among those rescued to Canada. With her being the last remaining member of her family, it seems likely season two will reveal more about her past and the burdens she carries.

Now that the other women in their family are getting married, we anticipate the sisters will be attending lots of weddings and celebrations, including those of Hulda, Miriam, and Jehosheba, and many others.

One major difference from the book after the first season is that Aunt Lydia’s connection to the Mayday resistance hasn’t been confirmed yet. It’s unclear if the show will eventually follow the book’s storyline or is just delaying the reveal. However, we’ll likely see more of the complex relationship between Lydia and Commander Judd. While Lydia and Vidala appear to be aligned now, Judd seems to be distancing himself from Lydia, which raises questions about what this means for the future of the school.

Many viewers suspect there’s a hidden side to Judd, despite his calm and collected demeanor. As a powerful founder of Gilead, he’s carefully crafted a perfect public image as a husband. However, with his wife Penny experiencing another miscarriage, some fans believe he might resort to drastic measures – even killing her – to find a new wife, potentially Agnes. This theory is fueled by the books, where Judd intentionally poisons his wives to marry younger women, and it’s possible the show could follow a similar path.

As we head into the second season, it’s important to remember that Agnes has discovered the identity of her biological mother. The recovery of her childhood drawing, signed with her true name, Hannah, strongly suggests she’s about to challenge the status quo and potentially rebel.
