The first season of The Testaments concludes with a strong message of defiance. Throughout the season, Agnes (Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) form a deep connection, and the oppressive rule of Gilead starts to crumble.
Is Gilead nearing its end? It certainly seems that way, given the efforts of Mayday and Aunt Lydia. However, the real hope for Gilead’s downfall might rest with the bonds formed between the young women at the show’s center – those who are determined to create a better future, even if they haven’t fully defined what that future looks like.
According to showrunner Bruce Miller, the bonds between the women of the show – their ‘sisterhood’ – will eventually be what brings down the oppressive regime of Gilead, as he told TopMob reflecting on the season 1 finale.
Despite repeated attempts to separate them, these girls consistently overcame challenges by talking to each other. Their strong bond of sisterhood, built on trust and mutual faith, was key to their success. They shared an unbreakable understanding: what was said between them stayed between them.
Gilead believed the Handmaids and Marthas – all of these women – needed to be fundamentally changed. However, others argued that instead of breaking them down, they could be rebuilt and empowered, but only in ways that served Gilead’s purposes.
“That’s just not true,” Miller says with a laugh. “These are teenage girls, and they find ways to feel strong and take control of their lives in all sorts of ways.”
Now that Gilead seems to be causing its own destruction, how much longer will the events in The Testaments continue?
When questioned about the possibility of a six-season run, similar to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ series creator Miller described his process for developing TV shows. He explained that he always begins by brainstorming around 200 potential story ideas, not specifically for the current show, but for the world and characters it establishes. He believes if you can’t generate that many ideas upfront, you shouldn’t start the project. Miller emphasized that it’s frustrating to have a successful show that audiences want to continue, only to realize the story isn’t structured in a way that allows for it. He stressed the importance of proactively planning for potential long-term success.
I recently finished writing an entire season of a show and now I’m getting to watch it, which is amazing! I’m really excited to start working on the next season because now that the first one is done, I’m full of ideas. It’s like, ‘Wow, we pulled that off, what else can we achieve?’ A big part of the fun is figuring out how to keep challenging the actors and making each season even better than the last.
It’s amazing to even consider that I might be able to resolve this quickly. If I could finish it within a year, that would be wonderful.
The Testaments season one is available to watch on Disney+.
