TC Carson, the original voice of Kratos in the God of War series, is returning to the role after a different actor voiced the character during the Norse-themed games.
Dedicated fans may remember Terry Carson originally voiced the complex character in the older God of War games. Christopher Judge later took on the role, bringing a more serious tone to the character in the newer God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok titles.
After appearing in God of War: Sons of Sparta, the actor returned to the role, and playfully suggested at a MegaCon Orlando panel that Santa Monica Studio brought him back because they’d mistakenly let him go too soon.
Taking things more seriously, he explained that a “great conversation” led to his return:
I met with Eric Williams, the director of God of War Ragnarok, and after discussing his vision for the project, I was immediately on board. I truly believe opportunities come to us for a reason, and once we commit to something, we see it through to the end before moving on to the next challenge.
It made sense to replace Carson as Kratos because, although he’s a talented actor who can play subtle characters, Judge brought a completely new energy to the role that was a better fit for the Norse mythology setting.
Both actors have expressed a great deal of respect for one another, and they seem to be working well together to portray Kratos at different points in his life.
Carson’s main focus now is bringing his voice acting talent to Santa Monica Studio’s remakes of the three Greek mythology-inspired games, which were revealed during a gaming presentation earlier this year. Since development is just beginning, it will likely be some time before fans can hear his performance in the new versions.
The next God of War game will likely feature Faye, Kratos’ wife from the Norse mythology stories, as the main character.
A video taken at a fan event earlier this year seemed to show the developer hinting at new information about the game coming this summer. However, he later explained on social media that he was actually referring to a different project.
Faye’s new game, led by experienced director Cory Barlog, is anticipated to launch next year, meaning fans likely won’t have to wait much longer to play it.
The future looks bright for God of War, then.
