This Beloved JRPG Is Finally Coming to Steam 12 Years After Its Release

A popular Japanese role-playing game from 2014 is now available worldwide on Steam after being unavailable on PC for twelve years. Many gamers consider Japanese RPGs to be the best in terms of storytelling, and successful titles are usually released on multiple platforms, including Steam, to reach a wider audience. It’s unusual for a well-loved game to wait so long for a PC version, but now millions more players can enjoy it.

During a livestream on December 28, 2025, Cygames announced that the popular JRPG Granblue Fantasy will be available on Steam starting March 10, 2026. The game has been popular in Japan for years, but hasn’t been officially released in Western markets until now. Originally launched for iOS, Android, and web browsers, Granblue Fantasy has only been playable in English thanks to fan-made patches since 2016. This Steam release marks the first official Western launch of the game.

Granblue Fantasy Is Finally Getting a Global Steam Release

Granblue Fantasy is incredibly popular in Japan, having sold over 25 million copies since its launch. It’s often compared to classic Final Fantasy games, sharing many familiar features of the role-playing genre. The game’s success has expanded into a larger franchise, including an anime series, an anime short film, a manga, and two spin-off games: Granblue Fantasy Versus and Granblue Fantasy: Relink. While those spin-offs are available worldwide, the original Granblue Fantasy hasn’t been – until now.

A major highlight of the game is the talented team behind it, including art director Hideo Minaba, known for his work on Final Fantasy V, VI, IX, and XII, and the iconic Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu. Cygames also announced that the game has been updated for Western audiences with a widescreen 16:9 layout. While the original vertical format worked well on phones and online, it wasn’t ideal for a traditional PC release, so this change improves the experience.

As a big fan, I found out some interesting things about the Western release of Granblue Fantasy. It’s a bit of a bummer that it won’t be available in Japan, and even if you’ve been playing on mobile or in a browser, you can’t transfer your progress to the Steam version – we all have to start fresh! But honestly, with how much replay value this game has, and knowing there aren’t a ton of Western players yet, I don’t think that’ll be a huge deal. It’s taken twelve years to come to Steam, which is wild, but I’m hoping this release will bring in a lot more players and eventually lead to even more chapters being added to the game. I’m so excited!
