The creator of the popular Pokémon Emerald Seaglass, a game that blended the graphics of Generation II with the gameplay of Generation III, has released Pokémon Sunset, a new fan-made game set in the original Kanto region. But this Kanto isn’t quite what players of the first Pokémon games might remember, and that’s just the beginning of what makes this game special for long-time fans.

Pokémon Sunset reimagines the Kanto region shrouded in a perpetual twilight, altering the landscape and its Pokémon. This mysterious condition has caused the original 151 Pokémon to develop new appearances, created with unique sprites. Some of these transformations even change a Pokémon’s type, offering a fresh take on classic favorites.

This Pokémon ROM hack intentionally avoids features found in newer games. Fans of the original games will appreciate that it keeps things simple – there’s no physical/special move separation, extra game modes, level limits, or ways to increase shiny Pokémon encounters. You can just focus on catching and battling with your favorite classic Pokémon!

As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m really excited that Pokémon Sunset isn’t just for those of us who grew up with the very first games! They’re including a ton of Pokémon from Generation II as well, and even giving some of our favorites from Johto totally new looks. It’s the ideal game to play while we all eagerly await the next big release.
