January looks set to be a fantastic month for movies and TV shows, with new releases like Primate, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and The Rip hitting cinemas. It’s particularly exciting for science fiction and fantasy lovers, as two of the largest fan communities will both have their latest projects released in the same week.
Next week is a big one for fans, with two new shows premiering! Star Trek: Starfleet Academy arrives on January 15th, and just three days later, on January 18th, HBO releases A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new series set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. Both shows have generated a lot of excitement and discussion, and now fans will finally get to see if they live up to the hype.
What Can Fans Expect From Each Show?
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a group of young cadets as they train to become Starfleet officers. The show explores their friendships, rivalries, and first loves, all while facing a new threat to the Academy and the Federation. It combines classic Star Trek elements with a familiar coming-of-age story. Initial reviews have been positive, with critics praising the show’s hopeful and optimistic themes – qualities that have always been central to Star Trek – even while acknowledging some areas for improvement.
Let’s talk about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. HBO’s new fantasy series is set a hundred years before Game of Thrones and follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a brave but inexperienced knight, and his small squire, Egg. Based on George R.R. Martin’s story The Hedge Knight, the show takes place when the Targaryen dynasty still rules and people can still remember dragons. Fans are optimistic that this could be the best A Song of Ice and Fire adaptation HBO has created, especially given the mixed reactions to the final seasons of Game of Thrones and the significant changes made when adapting Fire & Blood into House of the Dragon. No reviews are out yet, but excitement is high.
This week is shaping up to be fantastic for fans of fantasy and science fiction. And honestly, sometimes that’s all we need!
