Tom Hardy Gangster Thriller ‘Lawless’ Leaving Streaming This April

A fantastic but often overlooked film starring Tom Hardy will soon be removed from streaming services. The 2012 movie is a thrilling gangster story set in 1931, where Hardy plays a bootlegger whose family business is targeted by a ruthless and determined lawman.

John Hillcoat directed this Southern Gothic gangster thriller, which received a nomination for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film features performances by Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, and Guy Pearce. Released on August 29, 2012, it proved to be a financial success, earning $54 million despite a $26 million budget.

The movie Lawless is currently available to watch for free on Tubi, but it won’t be there much longer. Tubi doesn’t announce specific removal dates like Netflix, but Lawless is listed as leaving soon, likely by the end of April. It’s one of several films disappearing from the service at the end of the month, including Road House, Goodfellas, and The Fugitive.

Inspired by the true story of the Bondurant brothers, the film Lawless mixes historical events with local legends, turning the bootleggers into almost mythical characters. Despite this larger-than-life portrayal, the film also feels incredibly realistic, immersing viewers in the gritty world of Prohibition-era Virginia’s backwoods, swamps, and secret distilleries.

Tom Hardy gives a captivating performance as Forrest Bondurant, the quiet but powerful leader of a moonshining operation. The film features bursts of intense violence, and Hardy embodies a character who commands attention with his mere presence. He’s a man of few words, but every one of them carries weight.

Guy Pearce delivers a standout performance as Special Deputy Charlie Rakes in Lawless. He doesn’t play a typical, bombastic villain; instead, he creates an unsettling character through subtle quirks, like always wearing gloves and avoiding touch. Pearce masterfully conveys that something is deeply wrong with Rakes, making every scene he’s in feel tense and unnerving.

What to Watch After ‘Lawless’

If you enjoyed Lawless, you’ll probably be looking for similar gangster films from the same era. Luckily, there are plenty of good options! The Untouchables with Kevin Costner is a good place to start, although it’s less intense than Lawless.
