Top Gun 3 officially confirmed after huge success of Maverick – and Tom Cruise’s future with franchise revealed

Okay, huge news for all of us Top Gun fans! They’re actually making a third movie, and thankfully, Tom Cruise is returning as Maverick! I’m so excited to see what happens next!

Paramount confirmed the news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and announced that longtime producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be back for the project.

We don’t know yet who will direct the next movie. Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, is currently working on other films, like a new Miami Vice movie and a thriller about UFOs.

Christopher McQuarrie, the director of several Mission: Impossible films and a frequent collaborator with Tom Cruise, was already confirmed to be writing the script for the next installment. He previously co-wrote the screenplay for the last film with Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer.

Last May, while on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, McQuarrie revealed that the story for the upcoming movie was already completely written and finalized.

He said it was surprisingly easy. He’d expected a challenge, but approached the situation with an open mind, thinking, ‘Let’s figure this out.’ Ehren Kruger suggested an idea, which he immediately liked, and after just one discussion, they had a solid plan in place.

“So, no, it’s not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.”

He didn’t reveal anything about the new movie’s plot, and Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon didn’t offer any additional details either. They only officially announced the film and confirmed that Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer would be returning.

We don’t yet know if any other actors from the last movie will be back. That film featured many new faces, like Miles Teller as Rooster – the son of Maverick’s deceased friend Goose – and Jennifer Connelly as Penny, a new romantic interest.

The cast also featured rising stars like Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, and Greg Tarzan Davis, all of whom have seen their careers flourish since appearing in the film.

Released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick was a massive success, both financially and critically. It came 36 years after the original Top Gun and was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

We’re eager to see if the latest installment continues the positive trend, and we’ll share any new information as it becomes available.
