Among the top-tier sequels that built upon an existing franchise, one standout has gained immense popularity on streaming platforms three years following its debut. The performance of Tom Cruise’s production on these streaming rankings is nothing short of spectacular.
As of July 5, the movie “Top Gun: Maverick” has moved up to the second position in Paramount+’s Top 10 Movies in the United States. The film is also ranked within the top 10 in 19 other countries worldwide, with an average global ranking of number 2. This week, “Maverick” has maintained a strong hold on streaming charts, initially holding the third spot and later moving up to second place earlier today. Released in 2022 as a sequel to the 1986 film “Top Gun,” “Top Gun: Maverick” follows the character of naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
In 2022, the movie “Maverick” was extraordinarily well-received, with critics even going so far as to declare it surpassed its predecessor. It garnered six Academy Award nominations, among them Best Picture (and took home the award for Best Sound). During its initial theater run, “Maverick” earned a staggering $1.496 billion globally, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year and Tom Cruise’s most successful movie to date. The film’s remarkable success paved the way for further installments.
30 years after the original film, “Top Gun: Maverick” finds our hero, Maverick, a highly respected test pilot, mentoring a fresh batch of Top Gun graduates. Among them is the son of his late best friend. As Maverick grapples with his past, he also prepares these elite aviators for a dangerous mission that compels him to mend fences with Rooster, who harbors resentment towards Maverick due to his involvement, albeit indirect, in his father’s demise.
Besides Cruise and Teller, the film “Top Gun: Maverick” features Jennifer Connelly in the role of Penny, who rekindles Maverick’s romantic feelings. Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and additional stars grace the screen as well.
Top Gun 3 Director Teases Tom Cruise’s ‘Last Ride’
In May of this year, it was confirmed by Christopher McQuarrie, writer and producer of “Top Gun: Maverick”, that he is penning “Top Gun 3”. At the moment, specifics about the forthcoming sequel are few, but director Joseph Kosinski has hinted at the potential direction of the plot. Moreover, he disclosed that the narrative may continue within the franchise, and suggested that there could be one more adventure for Maverick. As Kosinski stated, “There’s still more story to tell for him. There’s one last ride. So we’re currently working on it.
In the upcoming film, Top Gun 3, it appears that Maverick’s mission will surpass anything previously seen, as suggested by Kosinski. He stated, “I believe we’ve discovered a method to execute it, not just in terms of the magnitude of our proposal, but the concept itself of the story we’re spinning.” They are considering a much larger scope for this story, one that will significantly challenge Maverick and potentially make him feel insignificant. Essentially, Maverick faces an existential dilemma that could seem minuscule compared to what they are discussing in the film.
Top Gun: Maverick is now streaming on Paramount+.
