Toy Story 5 Confirms a Weird Update for One Beloved Character After 3 Movies

Despite many additions and changes throughout the Toy Story series – including four films, three Buzz Lightyear spin-offs, seven shorts, and a Forky series – the core group of characters has largely stayed the same. While we’ve seen temporary story changes (like Buzz briefly speaking Spanish) and characters like Woody move on, new faces added, and some voice actors replaced, you could always rely on the main characters behaving as expected. Woody’s anxious, Buzz is a bit of a goofball, Jessie is spunky, Mr. Potato Head is sarcastic, and Rex is a scaredy-cat – their personalities were reliably consistent. That is, until recently.

A familiar face in the Toy Story franchise is getting a voice for the first time in the upcoming Toy Story 5. Bullseye, who has been a silent character for three movies and several other appearances, will now speak, and Alan Cumming (X-Men 2) will be providing the voice. Cumming told LADBible he was thrilled and surprised to be cast, noting that finding the right voice was a process. They considered different options, as a Scottish accent didn’t quite fit a Wild West horse! He hints that the story will explain why Bullseye suddenly gains the ability to talk, justifying their wide range of vocal choices.

Why Bullseye Speaks in Toy Story 5

Don’t worry, this voice change isn’t permanent. Alan Cumming makes a brief appearance as an alternate version of the character Bullseye, called Evil Bullseye. This happens during a playful scene with a new character named Blaze, who lives in the house of Jessie’s previous owner. It’s similar to how Andy used to imagine Mr. Potato Head as One-Eyed Bart or Ham as Evil Doctor Porkchop. Cumming explained his role is small, but special, as this version of Bullseye has never been voiced before.

He also spoke about putting his voice to the horse: “Voice work is pretty much the same wherever you do it and on what scale. I really like it as it makes you really focus on the nuance and timbre of your voice and your accent, and even your breathing. Obviously you don’t have to get all made up and into a costume, and sometimes you can do it from your bed…! It’s going to give me great kudos with my friends’ kids to be in this one.”

Several new actors are joining the cast of Toy Story 5. Conan O’Brien will voice Smarty Pants, a toy designed to help with potty training, while Greta Lee plays Lilypad, the film’s tech-focused villain. Craig Robinson is Atlas, and Matty Matheson from The Bear will play Dr. Nutcase. John Hopkins, Jeff Bergman, and Anna Vocino will take over the roles of Mr. Pricklepants, Mr. Potato Pants, and Mrs. Potato Pants, respectively, following the previous unavailability of Piers Brosnan and the passing of Don Rickles and Estelle Harris.
