Starz has cancelled , meaning there won’t be a second season. Although critics liked the show and work on Season 2 had begun, it’s been discontinued unless another network or streaming platform picks it up.
According to reports, Starz has canceled Spartacus: House of Ashur after only one season. However, there’s still a chance the show could continue – Lionsgate Television is currently looking for a new home for it on other streaming or TV platforms. Starz reportedly canceled the series because its audience didn’t quite fit with their focus on shows appealing to women and underrepresented groups, and it didn’t attract as many viewers as the original Spartacus series.
Spartacus: House of Ashur Scored High With Critics
Okay, so this show is getting amazing reviews from critics – a whopping 91% on Rotten Tomatoes! But it’s a bit of a mixed bag with regular viewers, scoring around 63%. I’ve seen some people online complaining about it being ‘too woke,’ and honestly, it seems to be because the show really embraces diversity. They’ve got a Black actress, Tenika Davis, kicking butt as a gladiatrix named Achillia, and a bunch of LGBTQ+ characters, which apparently bothers some folks. Personally, I think it’s great to see that kind of representation, but it’s definitely a talking point.
According to one viewer, Rotten Tomatoes critics aren’t interested in a good story – they seem to enjoy anything, regardless of quality.
One viewer called the show “terrible and preachy,” criticizing it for prioritizing social messaging over quality acting and a good story.
House of Ashur is a spin-off of the series Spartacus, but it tells a different story. Instead of continuing directly after the original show, it imagines a new timeline where Ashur (Nick E. Taraby) lived through the events of Spartacus: Vengeance. The series follows Ashur as he strives for power, aided by Achillia, who is also determined to make her mark in a male-dominated world.
Plans Have Been Made for a Second Season
If another network decides to continue the show for a second season, viewers might see familiar faces from other Spartacus series. However, creator Steven S. DeKnight has hinted that the story will mainly focus on the characters first introduced in House of Ashur.
According to showrunner Phil DeKnight, a potential storyline involving Pompey, who appeared in the original series’ finale and is currently a fugitive, remains open. Fans are also frequently asking about the possibility of seeing the character Crassus appear in the show, as he’s been referenced throughout the series.
He explained that, like with the character Crassus in the original show – who was talked about for three seasons before appearing – they can build up future characters gradually. However, his priority at the moment is developing the characters they’re currently introducing.
