As a kid growing up in the 90s, Nickelodeon was everything! Looking back, it wasn’t just random cartoons and shows – they really knew how to mix things up. They had these incredibly creative cartoons like Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, and Doug that were so different from anything else on TV, but then they’d hit you with the hilarious, fast-paced energy of All That. It was amazing to watch! That show, and everything around it, really gave a lot of young comedians a chance to shine and develop their own unique style – a lot of them worked as pairs, which was super funny. It all led to Kenan & Kel, which basically owned the late 90s. Seriously, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell became huge stars because of that show, and I was totally hooked!
Though Kenan & Kel stopped airing in 2001, the show is coming back in a new way with a horror-comedy movie called Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein. Kenan Thompson revealed the project on a recent episode of Good Sports, the Prime Video talk show he co-hosts. The movie centers around two delivery guys who get a late-night job at a spooky mansion and accidentally bring Frankenstein’s monster back to life. This is a big change for the pair, moving away from their usual sitcom style and into a movie that mixes scares with their classic humor.
Thompson said they and Mitchell have always enjoyed collaborating, and this film seemed like a great blend of familiar elements, humor, and surprises. Mitchell chimed in, saying it was easy to fall back into working together and that the project allows them to build on what fans already appreciate about their partnership while also exploring fresh ideas.
Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell Remain a Fantastic Creative Duo

The idea of a Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein movie might seem silly, but Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have consistently proven they know how to make people laugh. They first became famous with the show Kenan & Kel, and then starred in the 1990s comedy Good Burger, which started as a sketch on All That. Despite doubts, Good Burger became a popular and enduring cult classic. They recently showed they still have what it takes with Good Burger 2 in 2023, which did very well on Paramount+.
This new film’s creative vision is clearly influenced by the classic comedies of Abbott and Costello. By taking cues from their “meet the monster” films, the filmmakers have built the project on a strong foundation of comedy-horror, giving the actors room to showcase their skills in physical comedy and perfect timing. Because Thompson and Mitchell are also producing, they’re heavily invested in maintaining the same playful tone that made them famous.
