As a parent, I’m really hearing it’s almost certain that kids 16 and under in the UK will soon be blocked from using social media. Apparently, Prime Minister Starmer thinks they can get a new law passed before the end of the year to make it happen – which honestly, feels like a good thing!
You might be wondering why I’m discussing this on a PlayStation website. The reason is that this proposed plan is causing concern within the gaming community, with some fearing it could lead to restrictions on online games as well.
The Labour party, led by Starmer, believes children – up to age 16 – need protection from harmful content and practices they might encounter online.
According to the official announcement, the changes will help children reclaim their free time, encouraging them to play more and spend less time on screens.
Currently, the ban will affect popular social media apps like Facebook, X (previously Twitter), TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, in addition to YouTube.
Livestreaming will also be banned “across all platforms”.
The article does state that the ban won’t stop kids from playing online multiplayer games, but that statement feels incomplete, like something is missing.
More details on all of this will apparently be shared in July.
People in the UK have seen similar policies before, as the government has been working on ways to verify ages for accessing online content. This new ban builds directly on those existing efforts.
If you have a PlayStation 5 in the UK, you’ve likely encountered the new system that requires you to verify your age before using its chat and other communication features.
Could this restriction pave the way for broader limitations on gaming? Please keep the discussion respectful in the comments.
