Viggo Mortensen’s Reaction to The Lord of the Rings’ New Movie Recasting Aragorn Revealed

Fans are getting a return trip to Middle-earth next year with the new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. The movie will bring back beloved characters, and at a recent event, it was confirmed that Andy Serkis (who is also directing), Elijah Wood, and Ian McKellen will reprise their iconic roles. While Aragorn will appear in The Hunt for Gollum, Viggo Mortensen won’t be playing him this time – Jamie Dornan will take on the role. Everyone is eager to see Dornan’s performance, and he’s already received the blessing of the original Aragorn actor.

While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Andy Serkis talked about The Hunt for Gollum and Jamie Dornan’s casting. He explained he wasn’t ready to discuss the reasons behind casting Dornan as Aragorn, wanting to share that information later. Serkis mentioned they were close to starting filming and preferred to keep casting details under wraps for now, but confirmed both he and Viggo Mortensen were excited about Dornan taking on the role.

Jamie Dornan’s Aragorn Is the Most Important Piece of The Hunt for Gollum

The Lord of the Rings remains incredibly popular, but recent projects haven’t lived up to the standard set by the original trilogy and Return of the King‘s Oscar success. While The Hobbit films did well in theaters, they weren’t critically praised, and the Rings of Power TV series and The War of the Rohirrim movie proved to be disappointing for many. Because of this, there’s some uncertainty surrounding the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum and whether it will recapture the magic of the earlier films.

The new film feels stuck in the past, repeating a common problem with established franchises. The Hunt for Gollum takes place between the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, showing Gandalf and Aragorn’s attempt to find Gollum before Sauron does. Knowing Gollum is eventually captured and tortured raises the question of how the filmmakers will make this story compelling. Adding to the challenges, the recasting of Aragorn is reminiscent of the disappointing box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Viggo Mortensen stepped into the role of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings fairly late in the process, but he ended up being a perfect fit. He’s become completely identified with the character, delivering a fantastic performance throughout Aragorn’s transformation from a ranger to a king (his speech at the Black Gate is a standout moment in the films). Because Mortensen’s portrayal is so iconic, it will be a real challenge for Jamie Dornan to take on the same role. Dornan is a skilled actor, but his performance will inevitably be measured against Mortensen’s, given that he’s playing the same character we first met in Fellowship of the Ring.

With a lot riding on it, The Hunt for Gollum is becoming a major film project, and the success of the movie may depend heavily on the performance of its lead actor, Dornan. While Ian McKellen is a well-loved Gandalf and Andy Serkis is uniquely suited to play Gollum, Dornan’s portrayal of Aragorn is crucial. If audiences embrace him in the role, the film could be a successful addition to the Lord of the Rings story. However, if viewers aren’t convinced by his performance, the film could struggle. Thankfully, director Andy Serkis understood the importance of finding the right actor, so hopefully, he made a good choice.
