Suranne Jones has had a lot on her plate recently, appearing in Netflix’s Hostage and soon leading ITV’s Frauds with Jodie Whittaker later this week. Now, she’s back for more – production on the third season of the popular drama Vigil is officially starting.
Jones will star in the series with Rose Leslie, and the story will take place in a new setting: the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and Scotland.
In the initial image shown above, we see Jones and Leslie on set, bundled up and prepared for filming. The snowy environment is a perfect setting for telling a chilling new tale.
According to the plot summary, their latest investigation leads them to a secluded research station in the Arctic. There, a soldier from a secret British special forces team has been killed.
The story goes on to say that Amy and Kirsten must track down the murderer and prevent a possible international crisis. This crisis is fueled by a scramble for energy and resources caused by the shifting climate in the polar regions, and it puts both their jobs and their relationship at risk.
The new season features mostly fresh actors, alongside a few familiar ones. Joining the cast are Jeppe Beck Laursen (The Last), Tornike Gogrichiani (Extraction 2), Steven Miller (Dept. Q), Benjamin Wainwright (Maigret), Artur Zai Barrera (The Old Man), Jordan Duvigneau (Mood), and Kaisa Hammarlund (Hijack), alongside Jones and Leslie.

I’m so excited about the growing cast of Vigil! We’ve got some fantastic new faces joining us, including Adam Fidusiewicz (from FBI International), Naomi Yang (who I loved in Under Salt Marsh), Eric Godon (you might recognize him from In Bruges), Conor Berry (I really enjoyed him in Karen Pirie), Amy Manson (a Rebus favorite!), Jason Tobin (from A Thousand Blows), Steven Cree (I’ve seen him in All of You), Killian Coyle (he was great in Shetland), Derek Riddell (from Industry), Alma Prelec (Secret Service was brilliant!), Dawn Sievewright (Undertow was captivating) and Shereen Cutkelvin (Summerwater was a gem!). It’s going to be an amazing season! I can’t wait to see them all in action.
Currently, the specifics of each character’s role are still secret, but we can expect them all to be involved in the new mystery, and each of them might become a suspect.
Following the news that production has begun and the new cast has been revealed, writer Tom Edge stated: “I’m thankful to the BBC and World Productions for supporting the bold vision of a story that moves Vigil to the Arctic.”
This series explores the critical challenges facing our future: the shrinking of polar ice, struggles for essential resources, conflicts driven by energy needs, and the dangers people face while seeking both peace and financial gain.
Jake Lushington, the executive producer for World Productions, also stated: “We’re excited to begin filming the third series of Vigil with Suranne and Rose in the stunning arctic scenery of Svalbard. We’re also pleased to have our most diverse cast yet, including both new and familiar faces from the Scottish acting scene.”
The show welcomes back several familiar faces, including Gary Lewis (Franklin) as Detective Superintendent Robertson, Dominic Mafham (Little Disasters) as Sir Ian Downing, and Orla Russell (Deadwater Fell) who reprises her role as Poppy, the daughter of Amy and Kirsten.
The third season of Vigil was announced earlier this year. Jones stated then that she believed it “sure will be a thrill ride”, and Leslie added that “this time, Kirsten will be able to travel and work with Amy on what promises to be Vigil’s most dangerous mission yet!”
In the previous season of Vigil, Kirsten remained in Scotland while Amy looked into a disturbing drone attack in the Middle East. Now, with both of them diving into a new investigation, we anticipate many surprising turns – and we’re really excited to see what happens!
