Most people familiar with Sunday school stories know about Jonah and the whale. Now, that classic tale has inspired the thrilling new trailer for the film Whalefall, and it’s a truly impressive preview.
After his father, Josh Brolin, passes away, Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the California coast to find his remains. However, he’s unexpectedly swallowed by a giant sperm whale. Trapped inside with only an hour of air, Jay begins to understand that the valuable life lessons his father taught him might be his only chance to survive and escape.
Directed by Brian Duffield, the film’s screenplay is by Duffield and Daniel Kraus, adapted from Kraus’s novel of the same name. The movie stars Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Brian Grazer, Brian Duffield, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum produced the film, with Doug Merrifield, Richard Abate, and Will Rowbotham as executive producers.
There’s talk that Austin Abrams did most of his own stunts, even the underwater scenes with scuba gear. This contributes to the trailer’s intense and unsettling feeling.
“Whalefall” opens exclusively in cinemas on 16th October 2026
