A full-length Rick and Morty movie is officially in development! This also suggests some changes are coming to the TV show itself. Currently, Rick and Morty is preparing for the release of Season 9, which is part of the original plan for 100 episodes with Adult Swim. Plus, with the show already renewed through Season 12, fans can expect even more Rick and Morty content – now including a feature film.
Dan Harmon, one of the creators of Rick and Morty, has confirmed they’re making a movie. Jacob Hair, who directs episodes of the show, will also direct the film. It’s unclear if the movie will be released in theaters or streamed on HBO Max, but production will happen while the TV series continues. The movie shouldn’t significantly alter the show’s storyline, though it might offer some new angles and viewpoints.
Rick and Morty Movie Now in the Works
In a recent interview with Cinemablend, Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon revealed that a movie is officially in development. He also confirmed Jacob Hair will direct, stating they didn’t even consider other options. Harmon praised Hair, describing him as a vital and consistently strong member of the team, far beyond a fleeting talent. This is encouraging news, as Hair has directed some of the show’s most memorable episodes.
Jacob Hair has worked on many of Rick and Morty‘s most acclaimed episodes, including fan favorites like “The Vat of Acid Episode” (Season 4), “Mort Dinner Rick Andre” (Season 5, introducing Mr. Nimbus), “Night Family” (Season 6), “Unmortricken” (Season 7, where Rick Prime was killed), and “Valkyrick” (Season 8). He’s currently involved with episodes for Season 9, and showrunner Scott Marder credits Hair with helping to shape the show’s creative direction, saying that if Season 9 feels strong, it’s largely thanks to his work as supervising director.
Choosing an experienced director who already worked on the Rick and Morty TV show for the upcoming movie is a smart decision. Creator Dan Harmon specifically wanted Jacob Hair for the job, believing he’s the best fit rather than hiring someone new. Harmon feels Hair has consistently delivered incredible work on the series, and that level of trust should reassure fans about the movie’s quality.
What Does This Mean for Rick and Morty’s Future?

Over the past few years, Rick and Morty has become much more efficient at making new episodes, allowing for a new season every one to two years. Based on this pattern, the show is probably already writing Season 10 and starting to plan Season 11. It’s been renewed through Season 12 and will likely remain on Adult Swim, where it’s currently the network’s longest-running original animated series. However, a new movie is expected to significantly impact these plans.
With Justin Roiland focusing on the upcoming Rick and Morty movie, he’ll probably be less involved with the TV show. Season 9 of Rick and Morty is considered some of the strongest yet, and sets the stage for a new direction for the franchise. This will likely lead to a new supervising director taking over the TV series eventually, potentially shifting its overall style. While other animated shows took years to release their films – like The Bob’s Burgers Movie and The Simpsons Movie – the wait for a Rick and Morty movie shouldn’t be quite as long.
The show and movie will be developed at the same time, meaning it will probably take a few years for either to be released. However, this project shouldn’t take as long as some other long-running series. Because each episode is fairly self-contained, the movie won’t require much backstory and will be easy for anyone to enjoy, even if they haven’t seen the show.
