But despite decades of stories and many memorable faces, the Merchant has become a particular fan favorite. First appearing in Resident Evil 4, he was a rare friendly presence for Leon Kennedy, offering useful supplies… for a price, of course.

However, despite these appearances, the Merchant hasn’t had a major role outside of the original Resident Evil 4; most of his other appearances have been brief cameos or simple references.

Resident Evil Should Bring Back The Merchant — But They Need To Be Careful How

The Merchant is a character designed to provide comic relief and a break from the intense action. He intentionally lightens the mood, giving players a chance to rest and restock their supplies. Unlike the more serious tone of games like Resident Evil: Biohazard, the Merchant feels right at home in Resident Evil 4. While characters like the Duke in Resident Evil Village offered some levity, they also had a hint of danger. The Merchant, however, was simply an eccentric contrast to Leon, and his quirky personality fit perfectly with the over-the-top action and Leon’s dramatic style.

The Merchant’s quirky personality really fit the game’s unique style, and his secretive nature suggested a complex background – something often lacking in smaller characters in Resident Evil. As the series became more action-focused with Resident Evil 5 and 6, and then returned to horror, the developers probably felt he wouldn’t suit the more intense atmosphere. Overusing him could have ruined the sense of mystery he created. While his absence makes sense considering the story and tone, his continued popularity with fans makes it surprising he hasn’t reappeared in a more substantial role.

How Could The Merchant Return In Resident Evil

Fans would love to see The Merchant return to the Resident Evil series, and there are good reasons why. While he’s appeared in other games and on mobile platforms, bringing him back would allow for interesting interactions with characters beyond Leon. A natural fit for his return could be one of the Resident Evil remakes currently in development. The storyline could easily explain his presence – perhaps he was traveling on the train in Resident Evil 0 or was present at the prison in Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

As a long-time Resident Evil fan, I think bringing back the Merchant would be awesome if the next game leans into the action side of things like some of Leon’s adventures. He’s a great way to lighten the mood when things get too intense. If a new game is super focused on being scary all the time, he might not really fit, but if they’re willing to have some fun with the over-the-top action we’ve seen before, he’d be a fantastic addition. Resident Evil: Requiem showed us they can do big, action-packed stuff and still keep that core horror-survival feeling we all love.
