What is Romania’s Eurovision 2026 song called?
Alexandra Căpitănescu will be Romania’s entry at the competition with her song, “Choke Me,” though some listeners have questioned its lyrics.
Alexandra responded to online discussions about her song “Choke Me,” explaining that it’s a metaphor for the pressures we put on ourselves. She said the song explores feelings of fear, self-doubt, and being overwhelmed by our own expectations, and it wasn’t meant to have any sexual meaning. She feels a responsibility to her fans who listen to her music and follow her online.
I’m a songwriter, and I often use imagery and metaphors to express feelings that are hard to put into words. This song is about dealing with tough emotions and finding your strength and independence again. For me, music is a way to understand and work through complex feelings and make sense of what’s going on inside.
I do my best work when I stop stressing and just let go. This song is about regaining control when anxiety and overwhelming feelings take over. I really appreciate everyone who genuinely listens to and connects with my music.
Where did Romania come in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest?
Romania didn’t compete in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest. They last participated in 2023, but weren’t successful in reaching the final round.
The Eurovision Song Contest has received a lot of criticism for letting Israel compete this year, given the current war happening in Gaza.
Several countries are choosing not to participate in the contest this year because the European Broadcasting Union decided against banning Israel from competing.
During a December 2025 meeting, the European Broadcasting Union voted to create rules preventing governments or outside groups from unfairly boosting certain songs to sway voting results. However, they did not vote on whether Israel would be allowed to participate in the competition.
The European Broadcasting Union announced that most of its members decided another vote on whether to participate wasn’t necessary. They confirmed that the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest will go ahead as scheduled, with extra safety measures added.
After that announcement, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland all stated they would not be competing in Eurovision this year.
Ireland’s public broadcaster, RTÉ, has decided not to participate in this year’s contest due to the devastating loss of life and ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which continues to endanger civilians.
The BBC, the UK broadcaster of the competition, stated it backs the EBU’s decision. In a statement, they explained it’s about following the competition’s rules and ensuring everyone feels welcome.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will take place on Saturday 16 May 2026.
