With Star Wars remaining incredibly popular for almost half a century, it’s understandable that fans love collecting related items. Most fans have some kind of collection, searching for toys, posters, clothing, and other merchandise. But some dedicated collectors go further, spending large sums of money to own authentic pieces of Star Wars history – like props actually used during filming, which are often sold at auctions.
Star Wars props continue to fetch incredible prices at auction. A lightsaber once owned by Darth Vader recently sold for $3.6 million, proving how dedicated collectors are. Before that, Han Solo’s blaster from the original Star Wars movie sold for $1.057 million in 2022 (according to the New York Post). While less than the lightsaber, it’s still a significant amount, especially considering the blaster’s place in movie history, making the high price more reasonable.
Han Solo’s Blaster Is a Rare Piece of Hollywood History

Movie props used on screen are always highly valuable, but Han Solo’s blaster is exceptionally rare. According to a New York Post article, this particular prop was the last remaining one of the three used in the original Star Wars trilogy. It was famously used by Harrison Ford in the first film from 1977, then was lost – meaning the prop team had to create new ones for the following movies. Because this was the only surviving blaster from that initial production, demand to own it was incredibly high, likely driving the final sale price far above its estimated value.
The story behind Han Solo’s blaster is surprisingly interesting. While its use in Star Wars: A New Hope alone would make it valuable, it has an earlier history. Before becoming a signature weapon in the Star Wars galaxy, this DL-44 blaster was originally used as Frank Sinatra’s gun in the 1967 film The Naked Runner. When creating Star Wars, Roger Christian modified it using leftover military parts to fit George Lucas’s unique sci-fi world. This explains the high price it fetched at auction – it’s a piece of movie history connected to two iconic figures.
As a movie buff, it’s fascinating to see how much these props can be worth! The high price really comes down to how rare they are and the history behind them. Even if all the blasters from A New Hope showed up at auction, each one would still go for a fortune simply because so few were made. But this particular one has an extra special story – it was used in The Naked Runner with Frank Sinatra! That connection gives it a unique claim to fame that the other New Hope blasters might not have. It would have been amazing to see all three DL-44s side-by-side, with the auction house clearly identifying which one(s) Sinatra actually held on screen. That would’ve really told a story!
Props from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi would likely fetch high prices at auction, proving how popular and beloved the original Star Wars trilogy remains. However, this blaster from A New Hope might still be more valuable. If the prop hadn’t been lost and had been used throughout all three movies before being sold, it possibly could have set a new record price.
