With the final episode of Outlander almost here, fans are probably feeling a lot of different things at once – sad to see it end, excited to see how the story wraps up, and grateful for all the wonderful moments the show and its actors have given us over the years.
Fans were prepared for Outlander to end after its eighth season, but the news still comes as a disappointment. The show won’t be back for a ninth season, marking the end of the series as we’ve enjoyed it.
The original show was popular enough to get a prequel series called Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which has done well and will soon be back for a second season.
But just why won’t there be anymore Outlander? Read on to find out.
Why won’t there be an Outlander season 9?

While there isn’t one single answer, Outlander will conclude with its eighth season; there won’t be a ninth season produced.
When the show’s cancellation was first announced, many fans were surprised and disappointed, wondering why such a popular historical drama was ending. However, it now feels like the right moment to say goodbye to the beloved characters.
During a set visit, when reporters from TopMob and other outlets questioned why Outlander was ending after season 8, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and executive producer Maril Davis surprisingly revealed they hadn’t actually wanted to end the show at that point.
Davis explained that while he would have continued with the show, he understands others might feel differently. He suggested checking with Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan, but believes that after a decade or more, people often want to explore new opportunities and projects.
I’d really like to complete the series of books inspired by Diana. We haven’t released book ten yet, so there’s a possibility of continuing the story, depending on how we end this season.
The show’s leads, Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe, have dedicated over a decade to Outlander, so it makes sense they’d want to finish the series at its peak.
Both Balfe, known for her roles in films like Ford v Ferrari and Belfast, and Heughan, recognized from shows such as The Couple Next Door and Suspect, now have more opportunities to take on new projects because they’ve finished filming Outlander.
Honestly, one of the coolest things I’ve noticed is how the team, particularly the crew, has really risen to the occasion. Seeing people take on new challenges and step into different roles has been incredibly inspiring – it’s just been fantastic to watch.
Balfe recently shared with TopMob that it feels surreal knowing the show will end soon. She said it’s hard to imagine life after the series wraps, as it’s been such a positive experience, and she’s going to miss it when it’s over.
We feel we’ve explored these characters as fully as possible and brought them to a natural point in their stories, making it the right time to end the show. Season 8 will allow us to give them a proper conclusion, but it’s definitely bittersweet.
Diana Gabaldon hasn’t published her tenth Outlander book yet, and it’s likely the story will diverge from the TV series. This is because the show’s writers didn’t know the book’s ending while they were creating their adaptation.
Though fans have a tenth book and the ‘Blood of My Blood’ spin-off to anticipate, the main ‘Outlander’ series is concluding. Given its popularity, it’s unlikely this is the end of the ‘Outlander’ universe, and we can probably expect more spin-offs and shows down the line – we’re hoping so, at least!
