Jon M. Chu, the director of ‘Wicked: For Good,’ has shared why Dorothy won’t be a major visual focus in the upcoming second movie.
The highly anticipated sequel, coming to theaters in December, picks up where the first Wicked film left off. Elphaba, now known as the Wicked Witch and on the run, and Glinda, a prominent figure under the Wizard’s control, will both return. We’ll also see the classic characters from The Wizard of Oz – Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow – featured in the story.
Although the story will share some similarities with The Wizard of Oz, Wicked: For Good ultimately focuses on the personal journeys of Elphaba and Glinda, as director Jon M. Chu recently told People magazine.
And because of this, audiences will never actually see Dorothy’s face.
I didn’t want to interfere with your existing idea of who Dorothy is or the story you had in mind,” Chu explained. “She’s just a piece being moved around in a larger game.”

In this version, Dorothy will have a more significant part than she does in the original Broadway show. Previously, her only visual representation was a shadowy outline when water was thrown on the Wicked Witch of the West.
The recent trailer for Wicked: For Good suggests Dorothy will have a more significant role than she does in the stage musical. It shows her standing with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, implying a larger presence in the film.
Cynthia Erivo recently explained to Empire that the choice to show Dorothy from afar in the film was intentional. She believes it allows each viewer to maintain their personal image of the character.
She explained the importance of Dorothy’s character by saying, “I really enjoy the subtle mystery surrounding Glinda’s feelings about Dorothy.”
She went on to explain that things are hectic for her friend, and she simply doesn’t have the bandwidth to handle this right now. It would have been easy to suggest the Emerald City train, but she didn’t, which seems a bit suspicious, Glinda!
I played Glinda as subtly annoyed with Dorothy whenever she had to manage her antics.
