The season finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters raised many new questions, even though it concluded the storyline involving Titan X and its worldwide destruction. Throughout the season, the show expanded on how the Monarch organization – and its competitor, Apex Cybernetics – first learned about Hollow Earth, and how they discovered the routes connecting it to Earth through areas called “rifts” and the “Axis Mundi”.
What’s next for the story? While Apple TV hasn’t officially announced a third season of Legacy of Monsters yet, everything suggests it’s likely. Plus, they’re already planning a spin-off series, which means the Legacy of Monsters universe is expanding. Find all the details below.
Legacy of Monsters‘ Next “Season” Is Prequel Series

Don’t worry about Monarch: Legacy of Monsters getting canceled. While Season 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, Apple has already approved a new prequel series (it might be a limited series).
The new series will center around a younger Col. Lee Shaw, portrayed by Wyatt Russell. As revealed in Season 1 of Legacy of Monsters, Shaw was lost within Axis Mundi for twenty years (from 1962 to 1982). After returning to Earth in 1982, he was secretly kept hidden by Monarch, the organization that believed him to be deceased, until Godzilla’s return on “G-Day” motivated him to take action. The series will also show that Monarch tasked Shaw with specific missions during his time in Axis Mundi, including one that took place during the Cold War in 1984.
The new series centers around Colonel Lee Shaw, played by Russell, and his dangerous solo mission in 1984. He went deep into enemy territory to prevent the Soviets from deploying a massive new weapon – one powerful enough to devastate the United States and potentially change the outcome of the Cold War.
Instead of moving the story forward, the next installment of Legacy of Monsters will actually be a prequel. Though most of the original show’s characters won’t appear in this spinoff, fans are already speculating about how the prequel’s story could connect to the broader Monsterverse and even provide crucial details for the third season of the main series.
What Would Legacy of Monsters Season 3 Be About?
In the Season 2 finale, the Monarch team successfully tricked Titan X into returning to Axis Mundi, using the main rift on Skull Island – Kong’s home. This mission also revealed a lot about the Titans, including how they communicate, and the world they live in, known as Hollow Earth.
Season 2 takes place in 2017, three years after the first Godzilla movie (2014) and two years before Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The season ended with an unexpected twist: the older version of Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) leaves Monarch to pursue a solo mission. He’s tracking Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe), who has teamed up with Isabel Simmons (Amber Midthunder), the adopted daughter of the CEO of Apex.
Isabel and Kentaro couldn’t conquer Skull Island, but that didn’t stop them from seeking out Axis Mundi, hoping to use it as a time machine for anyone who could afford the trip. When Shaw learns they’ve headed to a secluded jungle, he calls in a favor and follows. There, he discovers an active volcano, and the terrifying Titan known as Rodan, who is nesting within the lava.

Isabel Simmons and her team employed technology – some of which was created by May Olowe-Hewitt – to artificially increase a Titan’s hostility. This lured powerful creatures like Godzilla and King Kong into fighting each other to establish dominance. In the film King of the Monsters, Rodan played a significant role after Monarch scientist Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), who became an ecoterrorist, awakened it to fight Godzilla and Ghidorah.
Putting the pieces together, it seems Season 3 of Legacy of Monsters will explore how Rodan ended up hidden and inactive inside the Mexican volcano in 2019. The season likely shows what happened after Rodan was awake and flying around in a jungle in 2017. Overall, Season 3 will probably fill in important background details for Godzilla: King of the Monsters and continue to develop storylines that lead into Godzilla vs. Kong, such as the research being done by Apex.

A more interesting question is whether characters from King of the Monsters will appear in Legacy of Monsters if the show gets a third season. This includes Charles Dance, known from Game of Thrones, who played the villain Alan Jonah. Jonah’s actions were crucial to the events of the first film – he helped free Ghidorah and gave Apex one of its heads, which they used to create Mechagodzilla. Vera Farmiga, who played scientist Emma Russell, is also a possibility, as her character was still working with Monarch in 2017 and living with her daughter, Madison (played by Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things). Other actors who played important Monarch figures, like Zhang Ziyi, Thomas Middleditch, and Bradley Whitford, could also make cameo appearances.
We’ll keep you updated on all things Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, including whether it will be back for a third season.
