Many saw Microsoft’s decision to rename its Microsoft Gaming division to Xbox as a sign of a fresh start for their gaming business. However, there may be a deeper reason behind the change than just branding. According to Jez Corden of Windows Central, speaking on the XB2 podcast, the original ‘Microsoft Gaming’ name might have been temporarily chosen to fulfill legal obligations related to the company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
According to a recent podcast, Microsoft Gaming was created as a temporary legal structure to help complete the purchase of Activision Blizzard. This suggests the company was always planning to switch back to the Xbox brand, whether Phil Spencer was still CEO or Asha Sharma had taken over. Sharma’s reported plan to refocus on the Xbox brand might have just been a smart marketing strategy all along.
Last month, Microsoft announced it was rebranding, with leaders Sarah Bond and Matt Booty explaining the changes and future direction. In a joint statement, they explained that while ‘Microsoft Gaming’ accurately described the company’s organization, it didn’t capture their vision. They’re returning to the original name, Xbox, to emphasize a creative and innovative culture. Their goal isn’t to avoid differing opinions, but to unite everyone to build something bigger than individual studios or products.
Regarding their plans for the next Xbox, currently known as Project Helix, Microsoft leaders Booty and Sharma stated they aim to create a console with top-of-the-line performance. They also confirmed the new Xbox will be able to play both PC and console games.
Following a recent refresh of its brand, Xbox revealed a new logo featuring black and green – a nod to the look of the original Xbox console from 2001. The logo was shared on social media with the message “We Are Xbox.” The announcement quickly gained attention, with companies like Razer, Mountain Dew, and Discord responding to the news.
In March, Sharma first discussed her “Return to Xbox” plan, outlining a future vision for the brand and how the company intends to make Xbox consoles appealing to gamers again.
She stated they have three main goals. First, they’re focused on creating high-quality games, believing everything else depends on that, and will support their game studios in doing so. Second, they’re prioritizing the Xbox console experience, aiming to make gaming instant, easy, and available on whatever platform players prefer. Finally, recognizing the rapid changes in the gaming landscape, they are building for the future of how people will play games.
