Recently revealed remake Yakuza Kiwami 3 is going to be much more than a graphical glow-up.
Honestly, we all kind of expected this! When RGG Studio announced they were bringing the series back, they also showed off “Dark Ties” – a huge new story that tells us all about how Mine became the villain we know. It’s bundled right in, which is awesome!
Plus, Yakuza Kiwami 3 includes several new gameplay features and improvements. It’s more of a fresh take on Yakuza 3, rather than just a repeat of the original.
Interestingly, RGG Studio is also planning to revise the game’s story, which is likely to surprise or even concern longtime fans.
In a recent interview with ThisIsGame (translated by Automaton), director Ryosuke Horii shared that the remake allowed his team to revisit an early game similar to the first Yakuza titles. He explained they had always wished they could improve certain aspects, like expanding on characters or refining specific story elements.
It seems the developer wants to add more background information, but it’s hard to say exactly what that will involve until we actually play Kiwami 3.
Horii says the game now includes many new scenes designed to make the story more emotional and impactful.
Changing the story of existing Yakuza games can be risky, as some fans have pointed out. The new cutscenes added to Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut, for instance, caused disagreement because they altered how players understood certain events.
Ideally, the added scenes in Kiwami 3 won’t significantly change the parts of the game that are already good.
To be clear, Horii has said the team won’t change the main story at all. They’re focusing on adding more depth and detail to the story we already know.
What did you think of Yakuza Kiwami 3? Are there any story elements you wish had been explored further? Please avoid discussing the new character, Rikiya, in the comments.
