Yellowstone’s Cole Hauser explains why he initially had an “issue” with Rip’s “secret” in spin-off Dutton Ranch

Dutton Ranch’s first two episodes have been full of surprises, and viewers are already talking about one big mystery.

After the exciting conclusion of Yellowstone, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler are embarking on a new journey, leaving their former life in Montana behind.

Like all Taylor Sheridan shows, the new series features plenty of drama for the central couple. In fact, Sheridan and showrunner Chad Feehan have quickly thrown several challenging and dramatic events at them within the first two episodes of the show.

If you’ve started watching the new show, you’ve probably seen the first two episodes. If not, stop reading now – the following contains spoilers!

After Rip finds a body buried on his ranch in Texas, viewers of Yellowstone likely thought he’d do the honest thing and report it, especially since he’s been trying to change his ways. No one anticipated him keeping it a secret, particularly from his wife.

Rip is dealing with this problem the same way he always has – by secretly disposing of the body and keeping it to himself, just like when he worked for John Dutton.

TopMob recently spoke with Cole Hauser and questioned why his character would hide something from Beth, knowing that secrets usually cause big problems.

He admitted he found the teasing a little amusing, but explained it was done to shield Beth and keep her from being upset. He simply didn’t want her to worry.

He hoped she would appreciate the quiet and calm, a welcome change from her busy life in Montana and years of working for her father.

Just because it’s possible doesn’t make it a smart move, and it could easily cause problems for Rip. However, Hauser initially worried about this direction for Rip, he now understands and respects the reasoning behind it.

I initially had some concerns, but after talking with Chad Feehan, I realized what it was meant to convey. It wasn’t dishonesty, but rather Rip showing he cares for her.

Watching Yellowstone has taught us that the past always comes back to haunt you. This is especially true for Kayce Dutton right now, as a dark secret from the Dutton family – known as the ‘Train Station’ incident – begins to affect his present life. It’s only a matter of time before Rip finds out, isn’t it?

You can now watch Dutton Ranch on Paramount+. The first two episodes are streaming now, with new episodes added each Friday.

Dutton Ranch airs on Paramount+ every Friday until 3 July.
