A YouTuber who creates videos of modified game characters – often changing their outfits to be more revealing – says Capcom has asked him to remove over 1,000 videos. The request came after Capcom’s legal team contacted him about the “adult-oriented” modifications he made to characters from their games, like Resident Evil and Stellar Blade.
Kotaku recently highlighted a stream where YouTuber GrizzoUK shared an email he claims to have received from Capcom’s legal team. The email stated that Capcom owns the rights to popular franchises like Resident Evil and Street Fighter, and that they were aware of fan-made modifications (mods) for adults being created using assets from those games. They also mentioned that videos of these mods had been uploaded to YouTube.
The email stated that using the content in this manner violates their terms of service, copyright laws, and intellectual property rights. It demanded the removal of 1,004 videos from YouTube by April 21st, warning of further consequences if the request wasn’t met.
I’ve reached out to Capcom for comment.
GrizzoUK has removed the videos as requested and responded to the email questioning why their channel was singled out, pointing out that many other YouTubers create similar content. During a recent stream, the creator expressed concern about the future of their channel. They stated they’ll likely have to stop making videos featuring character costume modifications, but believe weapon modifications should still be permissible as others continue to create those without issue. They feel this may signal the end of costume modifications on their channel.
Capcom has expressed concerns about modifications (mods) made to their games. In a 2023 presentation, they explained that some mods are offensive and can harm the game’s reputation and brand image. They worry that these inappropriate mods could be confused with official updates, leading to further damage to their public image.
It’s unclear if this means trouble for creators of Resident Evil Requiem mods that feature Leon in a bikini.
