The X-Men are some of Marvel’s most famous characters, so it’s no surprise they’ve appeared in many movies and TV shows. Following the success of X-Men: The Animated Series in the 90s, Fox launched a series of live-action X-Men films, and several other animated series have been made since then. Over the years, many fan-favorite characters have been adapted for the screen, with some being portrayed by different actors. These adaptations draw heavily from the X-Men comics, bringing a variety of storylines to life in both live-action and animated formats.
Just like the comic books, the X-Men movies have shown us heroes dying. These deaths are often very emotional, especially when they mark the end of a character’s story. While each loss is sad in its own way, they all left audiences feeling a strong sense of grief.
10) Cyclops – X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Cyclops had a few memorable scenes in the X-Men films, but overall, his portrayal felt incomplete. The original X-Men trilogy introduced James Marsden as Cyclops, but the movies left out key parts of what made the character so popular. This made his death in X-Men: The Last Stand particularly disappointing – it wasn’t just a sad moment, but a clear sign of how the films had failed to do justice to a major X-Men hero.
9) Morph – X-Men: The Animated Series

The characters in X-Men: The Animated Series largely became well-known because the show was so popular. However, Morph is mostly remembered for his surprising death. Since he was presented as a key character and the show was geared towards children, his death had a strong impact on viewers. This moment proved that the series wasn’t afraid to take risks with its adaptation of the Marvel comics, and even today, Morph’s death remains one of the most shocking and upsetting moments in X-Men history.
8) Jean Grey – X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Most fans agree that the X-Men movies didn’t do justice to the Dark Phoenix story, and ultimately squandered a great Marvel narrative. However, Jean Grey’s death in X-Men: The Last Stand still resonates emotionally. It was a powerful conclusion to a story developed over three films. The scene forces Wolverine to confront the heartbreaking reality that he’s the only one who can end Jean’s suffering, leading to a difficult fight to reach her and a tragic sacrifice. Their final moments together are genuinely touching, and it remains one of the most impactful scenes for Wolverine in the entire X-Men series.
7) Charles Xavier – X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Professor X has died on screen several times in Marvel films, but his first death remains particularly striking. It happened in X-Men: The Last Stand during a battle with Jean Grey, who was overwhelmed by the Phoenix Force. The moment, where Xavier was destroyed by Jean, was shocking because he was trying to help her control her powers. Even though it wasn’t a permanent death, it’s still a very sad and memorable scene.
6) Darwin – X-Men: First Class (2011)

A particularly disappointing death in an X-Men film happened in 2011’s X-Men: First Class. Darwin was presented as one of Charles Xavier’s earliest students and a key member of his initial team. He was said to be virtually indestructible, able to instantly adapt and survive any danger. However, he’s quickly defeated by Sebastian Shaw, who overwhelms Darwin’s powers with a powerful energy blast, killing him unexpectedly before his teammates. The scene is upsetting because of Darwin’s initial confidence, but it’s especially frustrating because his death feels unnecessary and doesn’t really serve a purpose in the story.
5) Jean Grey – X2 (2003)

Jean Grey is incredibly powerful in the X-Men films, especially when she gains the abilities of the Phoenix Force. She first appeared to die in the 2003 movie X2, making a heroic sacrifice to save her teammates. The heartbreaking realization that Jean didn’t want to be saved, particularly for Cyclops, made her death a deeply emotional moment that remains impactful for fans.
4) Mystique – Dark Phoenix (2019)

Although 2019’s Dark Phoenix didn’t fully succeed as an adaptation of the comic book story, it featured a particularly heartbreaking scene in the X-Men film series. Mystique, who had become a standout character in the Marvel movies, was unexpectedly killed during a battle with the Phoenix. Her death was genuinely tragic and highlighted a compelling idea: that Charles Xavier sometimes took advantage of his team. It was an emotional and surprising goodbye to a beloved character.
3) Gambit – X-Men ‘97

Gambit’s death in X-Men ’97 is considered one of the most shocking and heartbreaking moments in the history of X-Men television. His selfless sacrifice during the battle with the Sentinels, protecting his teammates, was incredibly moving. It was a truly upsetting and heroic exit for such a beloved character, and a standout moment in the show’s first season.
2) Wolverine – Logan (2017)

Often considered a fitting conclusion to the story of a legendary superhero, the 2017 film Logan depicts the final days of the iconic X-Man. After a lifetime of struggle, Logan faces one last fight to safeguard a young girl he’s just discovered is his daughter. The emotional power of the scene comes from Logan’s peaceful acceptance of his fate. While his death was later reversed in other stories, it remains a standout and memorable moment in X-Men film history.
1) Charles Xavier – Logan (2017)

While Wolverine’s death in Logan felt more impactful to the story, Charles Xavier’s death was far more heartbreaking. This is largely because of how he died. Xavier, thinking he was speaking to Logan, shared his final feelings of regret, sadness, and thankfulness, only to discover it was actually the clone, X-24, standing before him. The scene is made even more tragic as X-24 attacks Xavier, denying Logan the chance to say goodbye to his mentor and leaving him without closure.
