3 Best Movies To Watch On Netflix This Weekend (May 16-17)

This weekend, Netflix subscribers have some great new movie options, including two fresh releases and a detective film that feels particularly relevant right now. Last week, I highlighted Green Book, Zombieland: Double Tap, and Remarkably Bright Creatures, and I think Remarkably Bright Creatures is easily one of the best films Netflix has offered this year.

As a result, Remarkably Bright Creatures remains incredibly popular around the world, currently ranking as the second most-watched movie on Netflix globally and in the United States (according to FlixPatrol). The other two movies we suggested aren’t currently featured on Netflix’s top ten list in the US. However, we’ll be discussing the film that is number one – a new animated sports movie.

This list includes one movie originally produced by Netflix, and it’s the film that launched one of the platform’s biggest series. It’s a good time to watch it, especially because a new movie recently came out in theaters featuring a prominent character from the original.

Netflix has something for everyone this weekend, from family-friendly films to a truly gripping thriller. The three movies we recommend have earned high praise from both critics and audiences, offering a mix of lighthearted moments and intense suspense.

3. Goat (2026)

The new animated sports movie, Goat, premiered on Netflix on Thursday, May 14th. It features a strong cast of actors familiar to Netflix viewers, including Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger Things as the lead. The film also stars Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge), and a number of other talented performers.

The animation in Goat is incredibly smooth and well-done, coming from the talented team behind popular shows like KPop Demon Hunters and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The story follows Will Harris, a goat with big dreams of becoming a roarball champion – think basketball, but played by animals! Critics and audiences alike are loving Goat, with scores of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a fantastic 93% from viewers.

2. Black Phone 2 (2025)

Coming up next is a horror film recently added to Netflix. Black Phone 2 became available on May 16th in the United States. Subscribers can now watch this thrilling sequel, which features Mason Thames as Finney, a character who can communicate with the deceased through a payphone.

Following the events of the first Black Phone film, where Ethan Hawke’s character, the Grabber, was defeated, Finney and his sister Gwen find themselves facing the killer’s lingering spirit. They must confront him in a cold, mysterious setting that reveals secrets from their past. Black Phone 2 has been well-received, earning a 72% approval rating from critics and an 82% rating from audiences.

1. Enola Holmes (2020)

I absolutely loved discovering Enola Holmes! It’s the first film in a series that focuses on Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, and it’s a really fun take on that world. And get this – Henry Cavill, who you might know as Superman, plays Sherlock himself! Since he’s currently starring in In the Grey in cinemas, watching Enola Holmes on Netflix feels like the perfect double feature, or a great alternative if you’re looking for something to watch at home. Critics clearly agree – it has a fantastic 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences seem to enjoy it too, giving it a solid 71%!

As a big fan of Guy Ritchie’s work, I was really excited about his Young Sherlock series on Prime Video. If you enjoyed that and are looking for something similar, Enola Holmes on Netflix is definitely worth checking out! It stars Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock’s younger sister, and the film follows her as she tries to prove herself as a detective and uncover the mystery of her mother’s disappearance. It’s a really stylish and fast-paced adventure with plenty of twists and turns – perfect for a weekend watch.
