Hollywood has a knack for successfully reviving popular franchises. Films like Casino Royale updated James Bond for a modern audience, while J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek brought the series to a new generation. Batman Begins offered a realistic take on the superhero, and 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, though initially less hyped, launched a successful series of its own. If you’re looking to watch a couple of these films without paying, you don’t have much time left.
You can currently watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on Tubi, but they won’t be available for much longer. Both movies are listed as leaving the platform soon.
Why Sci-Fi Fans Should Stream the Planet of the Apes Reboot

The Planet of the Apes series is a classic in science fiction, but it almost disappeared after Tim Burton’s 2001 remake was poorly received. Ten years later, the franchise was revitalized by Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which quickly gained popularity through positive reviews. Critics loved the film’s engaging story and impressive visual effects, and Andy Serkis received particular praise for his performance as Caesar, the chimpanzee. He created a character that was both memorable and easy to connect with, and he became the central figure in a new trilogy. Serkis’s excellent performance helped Rise of the Planet of the Apes succeed despite some predictable human characters, ultimately leaving a lasting impact.
The first Planet of the Apes reboot felt like the beginning of a promising series, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes successfully expanded on that potential. Many consider Dawn to be the strongest film in the franchise so far, thanks to its thoughtful and complex story about the struggle for survival between apes and humans. What makes Dawn stand out is its refusal to paint a simple picture of good versus evil; instead, it explores the motivations of both sides. Andy Serkis delivers another outstanding performance, but Toby Kebbell is equally impressive as Koba, a truly compelling villain. Even though viewers might not agree with Koba’s choices, they can understand his perspective and even feel some sympathy – qualities that make him a memorable antagonist.
These Planet of the Apes reboots are known for their strong characters and clever stories, but they also deliver plenty of exciting action. Both films, currently available on Tubi, feature memorable action sequences. Rise ends with a thrilling showdown on the Golden Gate Bridge, and the climactic battle in Dawn is both explosive and emotionally impactful. Because the films balance impressive visuals with meaningful content, viewers quickly become engrossed in the action.
The success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes led to two sequels: War for the Planet of the Apes, which concluded Caesar’s story, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, a new adventure set far in the future. However, it seems the Planet of the Apes series is starting over again. Director Matt Shakman has been brought on board for a completely new film that won’t continue the story from Kingdom. While the future of the franchise is uncertain, fans can currently enjoy two of its best films for free.
