After a confusing journey moving between NBC and Peacock, Law & Order: Organized Crime has been cancelled. The show ended almost a year after its last episode aired. While cancellation usually means the end for a TV series and its characters, this show exists within a larger ‘Law & Order’ universe of seven shows, so these characters might continue to appear in other series.
Christopher Meloni landed his own show because he was bringing back a popular character he’d played for twelve seasons on Law & Order: SVU. Throughout Organized Crime, there have been many crossovers with SVU and the original Law & Order, naturally linking the characters and storylines to those shows. The connections don’t stop there – Organized Crime also shares a universe with NBC’s One Chicago series, and even CBS’s FBI and CIA shows, creating lots of opportunities for characters from different series to appear together.
Just because an actor left Organized Crime doesn’t mean they’re completely out of the Dick Wolf universe. Some characters, like Randall and Bernie, probably won’t reappear because their storylines were closely tied to Stabler. However, with seven shows currently running, there’s a good chance we could see other former cast members pop up as guest stars, in recurring roles, or even as full-time characters.
Christopher Meloni
Even though the season 27 finale of Law & Order: SVU demonstrated that Olivia Benson is doing well without Elliot Stabler, the Law & Order universe still benefits from Christopher Meloni’s appearances. The best place for those appearances is on SVU, alongside Mariska Hargitay. Meloni expressed sadness about the cancellation of Organized Crime, but he didn’t completely dismiss the possibility of reprising his role as Stabler in the future.
It looks like a reunion is possible for him, and the on-again, off-again connection between Stabler and Benson has captivated audiences since the late 1990s. Even after Stabler unexpectedly disappeared from Benson’s life for almost ten years, viewers still hoped to see them together. In an interview with NBC Insider about bringing Meloni on as a guest star in season 28, SVU showrunner Michele Fazekas explained:
I’m really hoping to include him, and if it works out, I absolutely will. It’s important that it feels genuine and makes sense for the characters, not just a silly moment or a publicity stunt. There were a couple of points during the season where I checked to see if he was available.
The final episode of Law & Order: Organized Crime concluded the show’s storylines without leaving major questions unanswered, meaning Christopher Meloni’s character, Stabler, could reappear on SVU in the future. Even though he was still grieving his brother, Stabler took a moment to appreciate the beauty of New York City.
If the character stays in New York City, it creates opportunities for Stabler to appear in the original Law & Order, FBI, and potentially even future CIA storylines. How often he appears on SVU will likely depend on Christopher Meloni’s availability and willingness to reprise the role. While major recurring appearances seem unlikely, even occasional guest spots would be a welcome change after the decade fans went without seeing his character properly conclude his story.
Danielle Moné Truitt
Danielle Moné Truitt starred alongside Christopher Meloni in Law & Order: Organized Crime as Sergeant Ayanna Bell, the head of the OCCB. Bell often struggled to reconcile Stabler’s effective but unconventional methods with following proper police procedure, and Stabler frequently tested her patience. In the season 5 finale, she even cautioned Detective Reyes against being drawn into Stabler’s reckless behavior, and she was frustrated by Reyes and Vargas secretly assisting him without her knowledge.
Given the character’s departure, it would be logical for another Dick Wolf series to explain Bell’s transition to a new position within the NYPD, allowing her a fresh start. Since Organized Crime resolved most of her storylines, she could occasionally guest star on Law & Order or SVU, helping with cases as needed. Special Victims Unit currently has a larger number of officers than detectives, making it believable for Bell to work with Benson, even with her rank as a sergeant.
Bell might also fit well into roles on CBS’s FBI and CIA. Although these shows usually focus on federal investigations rather than typical police work, their characters frequently interact with NYPD officers. She could even act as a connection between the NYPD and the federal bureaus, allowing her to appear on both FBI and CIA.
Rick Gonzalez
Rick Gonzalez first appeared in the Law & Order universe early in the first season of SVU as a guest star. He later became a memorable part of Organized Crime as Detective Bobby Reyes. Initially, Reyes worked closely with Jet Slootmaekers and Jamie Whelan, but he was the only one left after Jet left the team and Jamie tragically died. Reyes wasn’t afraid to skirt the rules, which made him a valuable partner for Stabler, though Bell cautioned Stabler about leading him into dangerous situations – a warning that clearly resonated in the season 5 finale.
Detective Reyes was a strong team player on Organized Crime, but truly shined when working undercover. Although Detective Stabler often took the lead in undercover operations, Reyes had a natural talent for it. This skill could open doors for Reyes to reappear in other shows within the Law & Order franchise. While Velasco currently handles similar roles on SVU, the main Law & Order series lacks a detective with Reyes’ level of undercover expertise, making him a valuable addition to the team.
The upcoming operation might involve interactions with the FBI and CIA, as the story is based in New York City. Reyes has previously collaborated with the FBI on organized crime investigations. He’s also a strong candidate to appear in the One Chicago television series. Similar to a past crossover between Law & Order: SVU and Chicago PD, a case could send Reyes to Chicago to work alongside the Intelligence Unit. Considering Stabler was able to work in Rome for ten years, it’s reasonable to think Reyes could handle a case or two in Chicago.
Ainsley Seiger
Ainsley Seiger, who played Jet on Law & Order: Organized Crime, left the show during season 5 when her character decided to leave the police force. However, the door is still open for her to return to the Law & Order universe. Jet wasn’t killed off and still wanted to help people, making a future appearance possible, perhaps even in later seasons.
Sieger started her acting career with a role in Organized Crime, and has only appeared in Law & Order and SVU since then. Interestingly, the reasons given for her character Jet’s departure from the NYPD and her breakup with Reyes actually make her well-suited for a new role – she’s now working as a computer expert for the FBI.
Although Seiger wasn’t switching from Organized Crime to FBI, the story explained her departure from Bell and Stabler’s team at the end of season 5 as accepting a position with the federal government. It’s certainly possible Jet could appear on CBS’s FBI. However, that show already features a tech expert, Ian Lim, who serves as the lead technical analyst for 26 Fed. It would be entertaining to see Jet and Ian interacting as contrasting characters on FBI.
Nicky Torchia
When Nicky Torchia first appeared as Eli Stabler in Organized Crime, he was new to the Law & Order franchise, but the character actually originated in a 2007 episode of Law & Order: SVU (season 9). The spin-off series aged the character forward, allowing him to officially join the NYPD in season 5. After being involved in a shooting, he was suspended, and the show left his future with the police department uncertain. His wife had previously expressed her desire for him to leave the force.
As a huge fan, I’m really hoping we haven’t seen the last of Eli! Since his story on Organized Crime wasn’t fully wrapped up, I think it’s totally possible he could show up on SVU from time to time. Beat cops often help with these kinds of cases, and honestly, I don’t see him getting promoted to detective anytime soon when season 28 starts. Plus, it sounds like the actor, Torchia, isn’t busy with anything else, and there’s a clear connection between his character and Benson, which is great! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Bringing back Eli Stabler, the youngest of the Stabler family, could be a smart move for SVU. It would allow the show to continue hinting at a possible romance between Benson and Stabler, even with Christopher Meloni no longer on Law & Order: Organized Crime. While fans are split on whether Benson and Stabler should become a couple, their deep connection is undeniable. Having Eli work with the Special Victims Unit might also challenge Benson to confront her feelings, instead of always focusing solely on her work.
