Want to end the year with thrilling disaster and complicated family relationships? HBO Max has a movie that fits the bill. It’s an action-packed film that’s quickly become popular on streaming, landing in the top 4 on FlixPatrol’s list, especially with its sequel coming to theaters next month.
Starring Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin, the movie Greenland follows John Garrity and his separated wife, Allison, as they desperately try to find safety for themselves and their son when a planet-killing comet heads towards Earth. With cities being destroyed around them, the family races against time, hoping to reach a potential shelter on a last-chance flight.
It’s A Decent Disaster Flick With A Lot Of Potential
Critics generally liked the film more than general audiences, giving it a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many found it surprisingly enjoyable, even though the story of a global catastrophe could have felt cliché. Ruth Marimas from FlixChatter Film Blog praised it as a well-grounded disaster movie and highlighted Gerard Butler’s strongest performance in years, adding that its thoughtful themes and emotional depth set it apart. Cody Dericks of Next Best Picture agreed, noting that Greenland consistently subverted expectations for a typical disaster film.
While some viewers enjoyed it, many found “Greenland” disappointing, giving it a 63% rating on the Popcorn meter. One viewer compared it to a rehashed idea, saying it felt too familiar and lacked emotional depth. Others agreed, criticizing the predictable plot and unrealistic science. Many felt the movie strayed too far from the central disaster, getting bogged down in unnecessary subplots about family drama and kidnapping. Several viewers pointed out that it closely resembled earlier disaster films like “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon,” suggesting those movies were better options.
Although Greenland doesn’t really offer anything fresh in the disaster movie category, it’s still an enjoyable way to pass the time. With the sequel coming to US theaters on January 9th, now’s a great moment to watch the original.
