6 Romantasy Book Series That Just Keep Getting Better

If you’re into romantasy novels, you probably know the pattern: the first book grabs you with a promising plot, exciting romance, and a captivating magical setting. But the big question is whether the series will keep getting better, or start to fizzle out. Some series start strong but quickly lose momentum, while others build slowly, and by the third book, you’re totally hooked because the world feels more developed, the characters are more complex, and the romance takes center stage.

This list highlights book series that truly excel at long-form storytelling, consistently improving with each new book. While creating a romantasy series may seem straightforward, it’s challenging to keep readers engaged throughout multiple installments.

6) House of Devils

If you enjoy urban fantasy like The Mortal Instruments or Crescent City, you should definitely check out Kayla Edwards’ House of Devils series. It’s a bit under the radar, but it’s a great blend of romance, fantasy, crime, and darker supernatural themes, set in a city where humans, gods, and monsters coexist. The series begins with City of Gods and Monsters and currently has four books. The story centers around Loren Calla, who must team up with the dangerous Darien Cassel after her friend is kidnapped.

The first book in the series focuses heavily on establishing the world, including the city of Angelthene, its creatures, and the relationship between humans and Darkslayers. This means a lot of information is presented upfront. However, the series improves as it goes, with later books exploring the results of earlier events, forming alliances, introducing more characters’ perspectives, and developing the main romantic relationship. While some readers enjoy it immediately, many find that the story truly comes together once the initial struggle for survival is established.

5) Fae & Alchemy

Callie Hart’s Fae & Alchemy series, beginning with Quicksilver, quickly gained popularity among romantasy fans. Planned as a trilogy, the series currently includes two well-received books. The story centers on Saeris Fane, a human thief who finds herself in a magical fae world full of alchemy and political intrigue. There, she becomes connected to Kingfisher, a strong and formidable fae warrior. Similar to Hart’s previous work, this series takes time to build its world, but does so in a more well-rounded way.

I was hooked from the first book! The chemistry between the main characters was fantastic – that enemies-to-lovers vibe was perfectly done, but it didn’t overshadow the interesting world and how much I cared about what happened to them. Then the second book? Wow, things really took off, especially after all those cliffhangers! Some people find it a bit much with everything that happens, but honestly, that’s what made the story feel so much bigger. It wasn’t just about the romance anymore – it started dealing with war and huge conflicts, which gave everything so much more weight and made me even more invested.

4) The Kindred’s Curse Saga

As a fantasy fan, I recently jumped into The Kindred’s Curse Saga with the first book, Spark of the Everflame, and I have to say, it’s a really accessible start to the series. It immediately draws you in and feels like a story you’ll quickly get hooked on. Author Penn Cole has planned this as a five-book arc, though only three are out so far. The story takes place in Emarion, a world where the Descended – incredibly powerful beings – basically rule over everyone else with a huge power imbalance. It follows Diem Bellator, a healer who’s just trying to live a quiet life, until her mother vanishes and she gets swept up in a developing romance with a prince named Luther Corbois. It’s a slow burn, but definitely intriguing!

As a big fan, I really appreciate how the first book eases you into things. It lays out the rules of the magic, how society works, and the core relationship so clearly, without throwing any huge surprises at you right away. That’s what makes it so easy to get hooked! The author clearly planned a gradual build-up, and honestly, it’s brilliant. It feels completely natural to fall into the story. Then, as you move through the series, everything expands – the politics get more complex, the magic becomes more powerful, and the romance isn’t just a side story anymore, it’s central to the main conflict. It all starts clicking together, and each book delivers a bigger, more satisfying payoff. The more invested you become, the more the world pushes back – and the consequences just keep coming, which is incredibly exciting!

3) Blood and Ash

Okay, let me tell you, if you’re the type of reader who loves getting lost in sprawling fantasy worlds, then buckle up, because the Blood and Ash series is a commitment. It’s become a huge phenomenon – six books in the main story alone, plus a completed prequel series! Author Jennifer L. Armentrout has built this incredibly complex universe. The story centers around Poppy, a young woman who’s been raised in complete isolation, basically treated like a sacred figure under all sorts of rules. But she starts to rebel, and that’s when Hawke, a captivating guard, enters the picture and turns her world upside down. It’s a real page-turner, but be warned – it’s a big investment!

The first book focuses on romance and hints at a larger mystery, deliberately keeping many details hidden for future installments. Some readers find the story unfolds slowly, wishing for a faster pace or more immediate action. However, with each new book, the world’s mythology is gradually revealed, and the romantic relationship remains a central focus. The series typically improves as it progresses because the unanswered questions build up, and each book ends with exciting cliffhangers. As the story’s conflicts escalate, the previously revealed details become more meaningful. It’s a romantasy world that consistently expands in a way that remains cohesive and engaging.

2) The Empyrean

Most people are familiar with Rebecca Yarros’ The Empyrean series, and it’s no surprise – a television show is already being made based on the books! The series began with the incredibly popular Fourth Wing and is planned to have five books total, with three currently available. While it offers a fresh take on the romantasy genre, it still delivers everything fans love. The story takes place at Basgiath War College, where students endure intense training to become dragon riders, all while experiencing one of the most talked-about romances of the moment.

Violet Sorrengail, the daughter of a famous general, finds herself at odds with Xaden Riorson, a wing leader – especially since his father was a rebel who was put to death by the government. The story is packed with intense survival challenges, a large group of characters, and constant competition, all fueled by a romance that feels instantly risky. What makes the series truly compelling, though, is that it moves beyond the typical military academy setting. When the story expands into a larger war with political intrigue, hidden secrets, and higher stakes, it becomes much more exciting, with bigger surprises and a truly addictive plot.

1) A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR)

Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) is a hugely popular series and really launched the modern romantasy trend. It’s a major reason why fae characters are so common in the genre today. Currently five books have been published, with two more on the way in 2026 and 2027. The story centers on Feyre Archeron, a young woman who hunts to provide for her family. After killing a wolf during a hunt – who turns out to be a fae creature – she’s taken to the magical land of Prythian as punishment. Like The Kindred’s Curse Saga, the initial part of the story is the easiest to follow.

The first book in the series might not immediately grab you, and that’s intentional. To really understand why this story became so popular, you need to read the second book – that’s where the story truly takes off. The world expands, the romance evolves in unexpected ways, and the central conflict becomes just as compelling as the love story. This series is a standout in the romantasy genre, clearly crafted by authors who know the tropes well. You can anticipate multiple royal courts, large-scale wars reminiscent of epic films, meaningful consequences for every action, intriguing side romances, and characters who grow in increasingly complex ways. Think of the first book as simply the beginning – the real adventure starts with book two.
