Transformers’ Next Movie Officially Won’t be the Crossover Everyone Wants (But There’s Still Hope)

The future of the Transformers franchise is uncertain, much like other major properties owned by Paramount. While Transformers was incredibly popular in the 2000s thanks to Michael Bay’s blockbuster movies, several animated series, and extensive merchandise, it has since struggled to maintain that level of success. Recent films haven’t resonated with audiences in the same way, though fans were hopeful things might change.

The most recent Transformers movie released in theaters was Rise of the Beasts in 2023. That film continued a trend by Paramount to refresh the live-action series and make it more similar to the original 1980s cartoon. But fans were shocked when Rise of the Beasts ended with a big reveal: the G.I. Joe team will be part of this new Transformers storyline.

Ever since 2023, fans have eagerly anticipated a movie combining Transformers and G.I. Joe, and those involved with the franchise have hinted it was in the works. However, reports have also surfaced about several other potential Transformers films being developed. With so many projects in progress, it’s been unclear when the Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover would actually happen. Now, a source closely connected to the project has unfortunately confirmed that it won’t be coming out anytime soon.

Transformers Director Reveals Status of G.I. Joe Crossover Film

Steven Caple Jr., the director of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is working on a new Man on Fire TV series for Netflix. He recently spoke with Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan about what’s next for the Transformers movies. Unfortunately, he didn’t have good news regarding the long-awaited crossover with G.I. Joe.

I have some ideas for future projects, but it’s too early to say what will happen. I’m not involved in the next Transformers movie right now, but the project is still being developed, so anything could change. It’s definitely still possible I could be involved later.

In 2024, Derek Connelly (known for directing films like Kong: Skull Island and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) was hired to write a movie combining the Transformers and G.I. Joe universes, but the project didn’t move forward.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has produced many Transformers and G.I. Joe movies, recently told ComicBook that a crossover is still possible. He said they’re committed to fulfilling what they’ve promised fans, who have been asking for a G.I. Joe and Transformers team-up since the beginning of the series.

Paramount is no longer actively developing the previously hinted-at Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie.

Which Transformers Movie Are We Getting Next?

Last month, signs began to emerge that the planned Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover was cancelled. Paramount announced they were developing two separate new G.I. Joe movies – one written by Max Landis (known for Chronicle) and another by Danny McBride (Halloween). With two G.I. Joe reboots in the works, it seemed unlikely Paramount would also move forward with a combined Transformers/G.I. Joe film, and now that’s been confirmed.

Last summer, rumors surfaced that Paramount wanted Michael Bay to direct another Transformers movie set in the world he created. Meanwhile, Josh Cooley, known for animation (like Transformers One), was preparing to direct a separate, live-action Transformers film.

Paramount is currently working on new movies and shows based on Transformers and G.I. Joe. They haven’t announced when these projects will be released yet.
