The X-Men are a cornerstone of Marvel, and their decades-long success is due to the contributions of numerous creative minds. Comic books are a collaborative effort, and even a legendary writer like Chris Claremont didn’t single-handedly build the X-Men into the icons they are today. Their popularity and importance stem from the collective work of many people who have shaped the team over the years. The X-Men’s story is truly a product of many hands.
The X-Men’s history is built on constant change – new stories, characters joining and leaving, and major shifts in direction. These choices, about who to highlight and who to remove, have shaped the X-Men into the iconic comic book series it is today. We’re now looking at seven of the most impactful decisions that defined the X-Men, some brilliant, some disastrous, and others whose true impact remains to be seen. Let’s explore the foundation of the X-Men to understand which choices truly mattered.
7) Krakoa

The idea of Krakoa had some serious flaws from the start. It was originally designed as a warning – a look at what could happen if the X-Men abandoned their principles and gave in to fear and arrogance, just like their enemies. Ironically, it turned out to be exactly what the X-Men needed, offering a much-needed boost when they were struggling. Krakoa completely changed the status quo and brought the X-Men back into the spotlight after years of uncertainty. No matter what its original purpose was or how things eventually turned out, everything related to the X-Men is now viewed through the lens of Krakoa. It will shape the future of the X-Men for a long time, and you can really divide X-Men comics into ‘before Krakoa’ and ‘after Krakoa’ – we’re definitely living in the ‘after’ now.
6) Giant-Size X-Men

This comic book is widely considered the most important X-Men issue ever published. It revitalized the series, saving it from potential cancellation by introducing a brand-new, incredibly popular team. Characters like Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus all made their debut here, and quickly became fan favorites. Beyond just new characters, this issue fundamentally changed the X-Men, transforming them from a largely homogenous group into a diverse, international team with a wider range of viewpoints. It marked the beginning of Chris Claremont’s legendary run, which ultimately shaped the X-Men into the iconic heroes they are today.
5) Jean’s Return

Jean Grey’s death in the “Dark Phoenix Saga” was a pivotal moment for the X-Men, prompting significant growth and change within the team – especially for Cyclops. When she unexpectedly returned in X-Factor (1985), it reunited the original five X-Men, but its impact went far beyond that. Her return ended Cyclops’s relationship with Madelyne Pryor and pulled him out of retirement. More importantly, it essentially eliminated the finality of death in the Marvel Universe. While characters had been resurrected before, Jean’s return proved that no death was permanent and paved the way for future resurrections and the return of the Phoenix Force.
4) Blue and Gold Teams

As a long-time comic fan, I remember the late ’80s X-Men were huge. They were Marvel’s biggest thing, but honestly, the team rosters had gotten ridiculously bloated. It felt like they needed a shake-up to really focus things and move forward. Then came X-Men #1 in 1991, and the creation of the Blue and Gold teams. It was brilliant! It brought all these characters back under one umbrella and really solidified their awesome new direction. That issue is still the best-selling comic ever, with around eight million copies sold! What I loved was that it worked perfectly for both new readers, giving them an easy place to start, and for fans like me who’d been following the team for years. It was a rare win-win!
3) Grant Morrison’s Run

Grant Morrison is considered one of the best comic book writers ever, and their work on the X-Men dramatically reshaped the team. Their 2001 run, New X-Men, gave the series a much-needed fresh start, introducing a larger school, expanding the universe, and helping it regain its former popularity. Importantly, this era paved the way for more complex and mature storylines. The shocking genocide in Genosha demonstrated just how dark the X-Men stories could become, and subsequent writers constantly tried to recreate that impactful tone. This influence can be seen in events like House of M and the X-Men’s more aggressive period, with every writer since attempting to match the high stakes Morrison established.
2) Magneto’s Backstory

It’s often said that a hero is defined by their villain, and Magneto is one of the best villains in comic book history. Before issue #150 of Uncanny X-Men (1963), he was a fairly standard evil genius. But that issue completely changed his story, revealing him as a Holocaust survivor. This instantly transformed him from a simple monster into a complex character – a well-intentioned man whose past trauma led him down a dark path. Since then, Magneto has become one of the most compelling figures in the X-Men universe. The conflict between his pessimistic worldview and Professor X’s optimism has been the heart of many great X-Men stories for decades, and continues to be a major theme in the comics.
1) Professor X’s Fall From Grace

Magneto’s emergence as a powerful figure was a turning point, but so was Charles Xavier’s decline. Once, Xavier was incredibly optimistic, and his vision of peace continues to be the core belief that unites the X-Men and drives their actions. However, events like “Onslaught” and Deadly Genesis began to portray him as flawed, even questionable. Now, many fans genuinely view Xavier as a villain. This moral shift has negatively impacted the X-Men, with the comics reflecting a loss of hope as Xavier’s own morality deteriorates. Recent stories often focus on his darker side, and his influence casts a shadow over the entire X-Men universe, both present and future.
