Generally, superheroes avoid killing. They’re meant to be inspiring figures and protectors, so they prioritize saving everyone, including villains. This is particularly true for DC heroes, who often strive to be perfect examples of goodness. While Batman is well-known for his strict no-killing rule, most heroes share this principle, with only rare exceptions. Taking a life doesn’t align with the idea of heroism. Superheroes aim to find solutions where no one has to suffer, and if a solution doesn’t exist, they’ll create one through determination and compassion.
Despite their reputation for saving lives, even heroes sometimes have blood on their hands. The Justice League, known for its virtue and selflessness, has included some surprisingly deadly members. We’re counting the deaths caused by seven of the League’s heroes, but excluding those who were villains before, like Lex Luthor or Black Adam – that wouldn’t be fair. Let’s take a look at who caused the most damage.
7) Orion

Orion is the son of the villain Darkseid, but was given to the peaceful realm of New Genesis as part of a truce. He carries his father’s anger within him and eagerly seeks opportunities to unleash it on his foes. A fierce warrior, Orion consistently leads the charge into battle and has spent years fighting against the forces of Apokolips. He earned the title ‘Dog of War’ through his relentless pursuit of victory. While he usually avoids killing when working alongside Earth’s heroes, Orion is fully capable of acting as a powerful weapon against New Genesis’s enemies.
6) Green Lantern — John Stewart

John Stewart is now known as the Green Lantern with the most wisdom and patience, but he wasn’t always like that. When he was younger, he was often reckless, boastful, and quick to anger. This impulsiveness led to a terrible mistake. In Cosmic Odyssey #2, John imprisioned Martian Manhunter, believing he could single-handedly stop a weapon that threatened the planet Xanashi. However, the weapon was colored yellow – a color Green Lanterns have a weakness against – and he was powerless to prevent its explosion, which wiped out everyone on the planet except the two heroes. While John didn’t directly destroy Xanashi, his desire for recognition ultimately led to its destruction.
5) Triumph

Triumph is a largely overlooked DC hero, despite being an original member of the Justice League. A time anomaly erased him from history, and when he reappeared, he discovered everyone had forgotten him. His efforts to reclaim his past success repeatedly ended in failure and humiliation. He eventually lost his abilities and fell into poverty, becoming vulnerable to manipulation by the villainous Lkz, a prince from another dimension. Desperate to regain his power, Triumph made a terrible deal with Lkz, allowing him to wreak havoc, almost destroying Earth and causing immense loss of life. Ultimately, Triumph was a man driven by a desire for acceptance, but his self-centered actions resulted in tragedy for countless people.
4) Etrigan the Demon

Etrigan is a powerful demon with a natural inclination towards cruelty and destruction. For centuries, he’s been linked to the human Jason Blood, and their connection began tragically – Etrigan, in his first manifestation, destroyed Blood’s entire village. While Blood has learned to manage Etrigan’s influence, he’s never fully suppressed it. Etrigan actively seeks opportunities to kill, indiscriminately targeting both enemies and innocent people, resulting in an immense number of deaths over the centuries.
3) Green Lantern — Hal Jordan

John Stewart never intentionally killed anyone, but Hal Jordan has. Although Hal has killed particularly dangerous or hateful villains like Krona, most of his victims came after he became corrupted by the entity Parallax. This transformation led him to pursue a selfish plan to rebuild the universe, and he ruthlessly eliminated anyone who opposed him. Parallax nearly succeeded in destroying all life, and Hal, under its influence, proved to be one of DC’s most formidable villains.
2) Spectre

As a huge Spectre fan, what always gets me is just how relentlessly focused he is on punishment. He’s basically the embodiment of divine vengeance, and he never pulls his punches. Seriously, from major supervillains to everyday criminals, if you’ve done something wrong, he’s coming for you – and the punishment is usually pretty fitting, and often deadly. What’s really interesting is that he’s so powerful and merciless, he needs a human host to keep him focused. Even with a good person guiding him, he’ll still take lives – he just really, really wants to punish the wicked. It’s honestly a bit scary how far he’s willing to go; he even allowed a dangerous ritual to happen just to create more targets for his wrath! But hey, you gotta admire his dedication, right?
1) Hawkman

Hawkman isn’t simply a killer; he’s arguably the most prolific killer in the entire universe. His backstory used to be incredibly complex, but it was simplified by revealing his first life was as Ktar Deathbringer. Ktar Deathbringer was a worshiper of a powerful, evil being and traveled the cosmos, committing mass murder in its name – potentially killing billions. After his death, a divine power gave him a chance at reincarnation, tasking him with saving as many lives as he’d taken. While Hawkman has saved numerous people over many lifetimes, he hasn’t yet atoned for all his past deeds. Despite being responsible for more deaths than almost anyone, he remains a key hero within the Justice League.
