Spider-Man is Marvel Comics’ most recognizable and popular character. He typically focuses on fighting everyday criminals and smaller-scale supervillains, using his spider-like strength. However, he’s also proven capable of taking on much more powerful enemies when necessary. As Marvel’s biggest star, Spider-Man has appeared in stories across the universe, battling a wide variety of foes—and even occasionally other heroes.
Spider-Man is famous for battling other heroes – it’s a common theme in Marvel stories, and as one of their most popular characters, he’s faced many opponents. But even Spider-Man doesn’t always win! We’re going to look at seven superheroes who have actually defeated him in combat. Let’s get started!
7) Shang-Chi

I’ve always thought the friendship between Shang-Chi and Spider-Man is seriously underrated! It’s amazing to me that Shang-Chi was the one who actually helped Spider-Man relearn how to fight when he lost his Spider-Sense – they clearly have a strong connection. Though, things did get intense in Shang-Chi #1 when Shang-Chi inherited his father’s criminal empire and Spider-Man became this really frightening creature. Spider-Man usually has the upper hand strength-wise, but Shang-Chi is just so skilled! He managed to use Spider-Man’s own webbing against him and free him. His sister did lend a hand, but honestly, Spider-Man had four extra arms at the time, so I think it balanced out!
6) Squirrel Girl

Doreen Green, also known as Squirrel Girl, truly lives up to her reputation! She famously defeated Spider-Man in the comic series The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe – it was an evil copy of him, but still an impressive win. She quickly took him down while he was swinging through the city, and even sent him (along with the Avengers) to the Negative Zone. While losing to Squirrel Girl isn’t shameful considering her track record, it probably wasn’t a pleasant reminder of past defeats for Spider-Man.
5) Professor X

The first Secret Wars comic brought together nearly all of Marvel’s heroes and villains on a strange new planet, creating a lot of conflict. In issue #3, the X-Men decided to side with Magneto, but Spider-Man intervened. Amazingly, he single-handedly battled the entire X-Men team and completely outmatched them. However, Spider-Man’s strength didn’t matter much when Professor X used his mental powers to make Spider-Man forget what the X-Men were planning. This effectively ended the conflict before it could truly begin, and the group continued on their way.
4) Wolverine

Okay, let’s talk about Spider-Man and Wolverine. It always feels a little off to me that Spidey can routinely handle the entire X-Men team, then get beaten by just Wolverine in a straight fight. They’ve tangled before, and it’s usually Spider-Man who comes out on top. But in Spider-Man Annual (2022) #1, Logan actually scored a win. It was a really tough fight, fueled by Agatha Harkness and her Darkhold scheme. Spidey figured out they were being manipulated, but Wolverine didn’t let up, capitalizing on the moment. Honestly, it felt like a bit of a sneaky victory, but a win is a win, I guess.
3) Hulk

Spider-Man is strong for his size, but the Hulk is overwhelmingly powerful. They’ve clashed several times, and Spider-Man usually tries to reason with or trick the Hulk. However, in Web of Spider-Man #69, there was no time for that. The Hulk forced Spider-Man into a brutal fight, which ended with Spider-Man being badly beaten. They fell into a river, and while the Hulk was unaffected, Spider-Man became trapped in thick bushes and almost drowned. It was a clear victory for the Hulk, as Spider-Man couldn’t even damage him.
2) Daredevil

The friendship between Spider-Man and Daredevil is a great example of a strong connection between street-level heroes. They have a deep respect for each other, possibly more than any other heroic pair, which makes their conflicts particularly difficult and emotional. While Spider-Man is physically more powerful and faster than Daredevil, Daredevil is incredibly resourceful. One memorable fight happened during the “Death of Jean DeWitt” storyline, specifically in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #110. Daredevil intervened when Spider-Man was consumed by revenge, and surprisingly, he managed to knock Spider-Man unconscious through sheer force. It just goes to show how much grief can affect someone.
1) Spider-Man (Miles Morales)

I’m a huge fan of both Spider-Men, and it’s amazing to see Peter and Miles working together now! But you know, it wasn’t love at first sight. I remember reading about their first meeting – it was actually a fight! Peter suddenly showed up in Miles’ universe, and when Miles said his name, Peter totally lost it and attacked! Miles had to knock him out twice with his Venom Blast – the second time finally kept him down. It really proved to me then that Miles is a powerful Spider-Man in his own right, and he’s got some serious skills that even Peter doesn’t have!
