Fans of Squid Game have been debating and expressing concern about what might happen to character Jun-hee, played by Jo Yu-ri (Player 222), since it was disclosed that her child is fathered by Player 333, also known as Myung-gi, portrayed by Im Si-wan.
During the climactic third season of Netflix’s popular Korean drama, a character experiences labor in the heat of one of the life-threatening games. However, the result is not what you might expect, offering several surprising twists.
However, after the birth that occurred during the Hide and Seek game in Squid Game season 3, no special consideration is given to the newborn – quite the contrary, many of Jun-hee’s fellow players seem unfazed by the sudden appearance of the infant among them.
It’s quite possible that the audience will show a more significant response, particularly considering the unconventional move taken in presenting Jun-hee’s baby as a completely computer-generated image (CGI) in Squid Game season 3. Here are some potential explanations behind this decision.
Why did Squid Game season 3 use a CGI baby?

It’s more practical for Squid Game season 3 to employ Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) for the baby character rather than using a real one, given the intricacies of filming, which include dangerous stunts, loud sounds, and extended shooting hours.
As I delved into the captivating world of Squid Game, I couldn’t help but notice the enigmatic presence of Baby 222, who, much like the older players, found herself embroiled in the deadly games of chance. However, this revelation raises an intriguing question: Was a real baby actually part of the massive sets constructed for this Netflix phenomenon?
It’s more likely that the use of CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) for the baby character in Squid Game was primarily due to safety reasons, as using an actual infant would have presented numerous risks and challenges, even with safety precautions, making it much safer and more convenient to use a digital version instead.
Additionally, it’s possible that other aspects were taken into account, like the challenge of shooting scenes involving a baby because of their spontaneous behavior, which could include crying or making sounds at inopportune times during intense sequences.
In the third place, working on a big production like Squid Game entails prolonged filming hours which often don’t coincide with a newborn’s constant sleep and feeding requirements. As a supporter, I can empathize with the challenges faced by parents in such situations.
In many productions, several newborns who look alike are cast to portray a single character, allowing for regular pauses to ensure the babies’ wellbeing, happiness, and safety throughout filming.
Additionally, infants who appear on screen in films or TV shows are often slightly older than the infant character portrayed. This is because, just like parents, they require time to adjust to their new lives before embarking on a career in entertainment.
In a different phrasing, it is possible that the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, desired the on-screen appearance of Jun-hee’s baby to resemble a newborn, rather than an older infant, which might have influenced his decision to use computer-generated imagery (CGI) instead of casting a real child actor.
An alternative approach might have been to first show Jun-hee’s child as a real infant and later switch to using a doll or digital effects for challenging sequences. However, such a method could potentially create an inconsistency in the final cut.
Put simply, showing infants in movies and shows is quite challenging. While the CGI baby in Squid Game might not be flawless, it’s a noticeable enhancement compared to Renesmee from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, which has been widely criticized.
