As a devoted fan of “Call the Midwife,” I must share some intriguing news. Although it’s been announced that we’ll soon see a film adaptation, regrettably, it seems that the beloved BBC series won’t return for an entire season following its 15th installment in 2026.

Nonetheless, the BBC has subsequently addressed those allegations and reassured viewers that Call the Midwife will not be leaving its schedule.

Back in June 2025, according to The Daily Star, it was announced that the show would conclude following a run of 15 years, with production for its final season already starting.

Based on the initial article, the Daily Star stated: “The decision has been made by those in charge that the final chapter for this period drama will air in 2026, marking its last season on television.

Nevertheless, the BBC swiftly debunked those rumors, maintaining that season 16 is still on its way at the appropriate time.

According to a statement released by the BBC, fans can rest assured that the beloved series ‘Call the Midwife’ will continue to be a cornerstone of the network for many years ahead.

Previously mentioned, we have two Christmas specials, a brand-new series, a movie, and a prequel series lined up, with the 16th series coming later on. Rest assured, “Call the Midwife” is here to stay!

Fans can feel reassured that the future of Call the Midwife remains secure, and even more thrilling events are anticipated.

In May, it was revealed that production for both parts of the 2025 Christmas special and the 2026 15th season began, while two thrilling new projects connected to the series are currently being developed as well.

A new TV show, a prequel set in Poplar during World War II, is now being made for the BBC. It’s expected to be broadcasted next year.

Alongside the upcoming prequel series, a movie version of “Call the Midwife” is also being planned. This film will take place abroad in 1972 and will bring back some well-known characters from the current show.

Additionally, it has been verified that the production of Season 16 for the original series is underway as well. All these projects are being scripted and directed by the creator Heidi Thomas, along with executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank.

Bombs dropped, yet life continued with newborns arriving, and the Sisters persevered. The upcoming prequel has plenty to offer our dedicated fans, such as familiar figures (albeit much younger!).

As the beloved characters from Call the Midwife progress deeper into the 1970s, it feels right for them to temporarily leave Poplar behind and venture into uncharted territories, testing their skills in a new and challenging environment.

An increase in hospital births and shifts within the NHS have temporarily grounded them, but now they have an opportunity to spread their wings and focus on what truly matters. Although the film’s location is kept under wraps, I can assure you it will be visually stunning when it hits the big screen!

Back in the early days of this year, while chatting with TopMob magazine, ol’ Thomas dropped a hint about potential growth in our cinematic universe, mentioning “we spot chances to broaden our narrative realm.” However, he also subtly hinted that our beloved show might need a well-deserved rest at some juncture.
