Introducing a New Realm: The First Journey of the Fantastic Four
In less than two hours, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces an entirely fresh dimension to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To achieve this within such a short timeframe, significant edits were necessary. Recently, we’ve had glimpses of trimmed scenes and abandoned plans from cast and crew members, but now we can experience one firsthand.
Artist Simeon Wilkins has unveiled some of his preliminary sketches for a scene where Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) pays a visit to Mole Man (Paul Walter Hauser) in Subterranea. Both Kirby and Hauser have discussed this particular scene during their promotional tours, expressing their disappointment at its removal. While it may not be part of the final cut, there’s still hope that we might see it in bonus features on a Blu-ray or DVD release.
On Instagram, Wilkins shared that he worked briefly on the movie ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps,’ focusing on scenes involving Mole Man and Subterranea. However, these scenes were removed in a subsequent draft of the script. Despite this, he was grateful for being credited for his work.
It seems this situation mirrors the one Kirby discussed with ComicBook last month during the promotion of First Steps. When asked about potential villains for future editions, each actor proposed distinct choices. However, Kirby expressed a desire to revisit Mole Man, believing there’s room for more screen time. She mentioned that she and Hauser shared an excellent scene that unfortunately didn’t make it into the movie due to time constraints. But she’s captivated by this particular scene and anticipates further opportunities with him.
Mole Man’s MCU Future
Currently, it’s uncertain whether we’ll encounter Mole Man or any part of the Fantastic Four’s world, Earth-828, again in the future. Mole Man contributed to creating the nostalgic comic book atmosphere and his friendship with Sue Storm was heartwarming, but his role doesn’t seem substantial enough for him to join the main Marvel Cinematic Universe setting, Earth-616.
In the forthcoming films, we anticipate significant interactions between these two worlds. However, being the culminating chapters of the Multiverse Saga, they might not devote much screen time to secondary characters. As for the future direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems to be evolving with entities like Mephisto stepping into prominence. It’s challenging to envision Mole Man battling demons, but in the MCU, anything can happen.
The movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is currently playing in cinemas across the United States. As of now, there’s no announced release date for streaming or home video, and details about any potential special features are yet to be disclosed.
