It’s quite possible that if Microsoft continued on their current path, the canceled Perfect Dark game might have eventually been released on the PS5. However, recent news suggests that the project almost found salvation by a third-party publisher, which could have ensured its appearance on the PlayStation platform.
According to a reliable report by Jason Schreier on Bloomberg, it appears that Take-Two Interactive had discussions about reviving the project. However, disagreements over intellectual property rights led these discussions to fall apart.
For those familiar with the project, you’d recall that before it was discontinued, the team behind Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics, stepped in to aid the closed studio The Initiative during their development process.

Crystal Dynamics, previously under independent ownership, was acquired by Embracer Group. Later, Embracer transferred the rights to Take-Two Interactive, hoping to save the title, as a series of heavy layoffs at Xbox had occurred earlier in the year.
As a passionate enthusiast, I was thrilled when the publisher seemed ready to back the remaining phase of our project and bring it to life. However, my excitement soon dwindled as a disagreement arose between us and Microsoft, the IP owner, over who would hold the long-term rights to Perfect Dark – a dispute that ultimately led to the deal’s unfortunate collapse.
As a result of recent events, The Initiative project has been shut down, Crystal Dynamics has undergone a wave of staff reductions, and Perfect Dark has been placed in Microsoft’s dormant intellectual property storage. It’s unclear as to why the company chose to retain ownership of the series when there seem to be no plans for its future development, but it appears that they have the right to do so.
So, there you have it – Perfect Dark was almost saved, but now it’s definitely dead.
