In the approaching finale of “The Apothecary Diaries” Season 2, many questions about the Shi Clan have been answered. Initially, it seemed that most mysteries in Season 1 revolved around Suirei’s plot to kill Jinshi, the Imperial brother. However, it was revealed in Season 2 that Suirei was actually working for the Shi Clan to aid Shenmei in her quest for vengeance against the Imperial family. The second season primarily delved into the Shi Clan’s schemes to cause turmoil within the empire, with Shenmei, mother of Loulan and daughter of the Clan Head, being at the heart of it all. Interestingly, Shishou, who was later adopted into the main family, was from a branch family.

In my own words, I found myself unexpectedly entangled in an intricate web of politics, despite being betrothed to my master. The former emperor, in a twist of fate, requested that my master take his discarded daughter as wife, a request he couldn’t deny. As part of the deal, he was asked to return Shenmei to the Shi Clan, an arrangement the previous emperor had no reason to oppose. For over two decades, Shenmei orchestrated a rebellion, one that would have crumbled easily if not for Loulan’s intervention. Yet, my daughter, in her wisdom, saw beyond the immediate challenges and managed to accomplish her goals despite being in a disadvantaged position.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Reveals Shenmei’s Petty Motives Behind the Rebellion

In a world where privilege often blinds, I find myself discussing Shenmei – a woman who, despite her haughty demeanor, remains oblivious to her own ignorance. Unbeknownst to her, she was chosen as a hostage by the former Emperor’s mother. Yet, in her mind, she was graciously invited to become a high concubine by the Imperial family.

At that time, I was betrothed to her, but Shenmei seemed overjoyed at the prospect of escaping my side. She paid little heed to my countless attempts to protect and save her. The former Emperor, due to his mother’s actions, harbored deep-rooted trauma and fear towards women. This is a tale that highlights how misunderstandings can lead to misjudgments and the far-reaching consequences they can have.

1. It didn’t take much time for his true pedophilic inclinations to surface, and he felt at ease only in the presence of young girls. Upon Shenmei’s arrival at the Rear Palace, she was a fully grown woman, so the reigning Emperor never once cast a glance her way. Blissfully unaware of the circumstances around her, Shenmei was thrilled to be promoted as a high concubine and harbored hopes of eventually rising to the position of Empress Dowager.

She was deeply embarrassed when other women ridiculed her because she hadn’t managed to win favor with the previous Emperor. Finding herself without any alternative, she had to go back to the Shi Clan and marry Shishou, just as her father had planned all along. However, Shenmei wasn’t satisfied with this fate, and she yearned for vengeance. Instead of orchestrating a rebellion to seize the Empire, she sought its destruction as a symbolic act of her petty revenge.

Shenmei’s End Was Brutally Satisfying, But Loulan Still Paid the Price

Shenmei never grasped Shishou’s affection for her, despite his repeated attempts to flee with her. In the Rear Palace, he was prepared to discard everything and lead a simple life with her. Conversely, Shenmei believed that her interest in him stemmed solely from him being the Clan Head’s daughter. Upon returning from the Rear Palace, she usurped all power from him, leaving Shishou as Clan Head only in title. Naturally, she could not have accomplished this if Shishou hadn’t remained indifferent and allowed her to do whatever she pleased.

Gradually, Shenmei guided the Shi Clan towards disaster, ruling harshly over all under her control. Eventually, her own daughter, whom she viewed as a mere pawn, revealed the truth to her. Loulan foresaw that the rebellion of the Shi Clan would be doomed to fail, so she devised a plan from the start to protect Suirei and their children, regardless of the cost to herself. Infuriated by her daughter’s betrayal and contemptuousness, Shenmei grabbed her gun in an attempt to shoot her. Unbeknownst to her, the weapon had been tampered with, resulting in it misfiring and rebounding against her instead.

In a manner that showed no remorse for her past actions or the lives she affected negatively, Loulan learned her fate – a tragic one. Not even the news of Shishou’s demise moved her. Regrettably, despite Loulan’s hostile acts towards the Shi Clan, she was aware that her punishment was inevitable. In the midst of her dance on the rooftop, she was struck and ultimately plunged to her death.
