Peacemaker Just Provided an Alternate Solution to Its Biggest Mystery (& You’re Not Going to Like It)

In both the DC Extended Universe and a separate DC franchise, Peacemaker has been given a challenging role. In the former, he’s imprisoned and is later recruited for Task Force X’s mission to Corto Maltese. However, things aren’t as they seem when they uncover that the U.S. government is engaged in a project involving child experimentation. Rick Flag becomes disillusioned by the deception and wants to reveal the truth, but Peacemaker complicates matters due to the potential damage such revelations could cause. During this turmoil, Flag perishes, and Peacemaker sustains grievous injuries, leading him back home where he must confront his abusive father. In a tragic turn of events, Peacemaker also kills his father, adding more pain to an already tumultuous life.

Peacemaker has been placed in difficult situations across two DC franchises. In one, he’s incarcerated before joining Task Force X on a mission to Corto Maltese. As they uncover the U.S. government’s child experimentation operation, Peacemaker’s role becomes complicated due to his efforts to maintain peace. Rick Flag grows frustrated by the lies and aims to expose the truth, but Peacemaker obstructs him. The ensuing conflict leads to Flag’s death, while Peacemaker is severely injured and returns home to confront an abusive father. In a grim twist, he ends up killing his own father as well, exacerbating his emotional turmoil.

In transitioning to the DC Universe, it seems Peacemaker encounters similar problems in his new environment. The key distinction being he now interacts with the Justice Gang rather than the Justice League – a group of heroes who have no interest in associating with him. Just as our protagonist, Peacemaker, begins to move past his embarrassment, an unexpected plot twist in his standalone series jeopardizes his plans and threatens to unravel everything.

Peacemaker‘s Alternate Universe Might Not Even Be Real

In the sequel of “Peacemaker” Season 1, Christopher Smith faces continuous struggles instead of basking in his previous world-saving glory. The Justice Gang dismisses him, and his longtime friend Emilia Harcourt distances herself from him. The accumulation of losses drives Chris to search for comfort elsewhere, leading him initially to investigate his father’s Quantum Unfolding Chamber. This device then opens a door to another reality, where he assumes the role of its Peacemaker and develops relationships with his father and brother. What adds to this universe’s allure is that Chris may harbor romantic feelings for Harcourt in this new world, potentially granting him everything he desires.

Simultaneously, back at home, A.R.G.U.S., led by its new director Rick Flag, is devising a plan to take down Peacemaker and they believe the Quantum Unfolding Chamber is key to this mission. In Season 2, Episode 4, Chris manages to evade capture and Leota Adebayo picks him up. The pair then travel to a secluded location to shift a door. Adebayo soon learns about Chris’ exploits, finding them hard to believe. She begins to question whether it’s all just a figment of Chris’ imagination, given his history of hallucinations. However, Adrian Chase’s involvement in disposing of Chris’ doppelganger suggests that there is indeed something beyond the door, but not necessarily as it appears.

A Familiar Face Could Be Behind Peacemaker’s Perfect Reality

The most popular theory circulating online at the moment suggests that Peacemaker is currently in a universe where the Nazis emerged victorious from World War II. This notion stems from the fact that the antagonist group in Episode 3, the Sons of Liberty, discuss overthrowing a tyrannical regime, and there’s speculation about Auggie Smith being a renowned hero globally. However, there are enough inconsistencies to warrant questioning if this alternate reality is indeed genuine. It’s possible that Adebayo might be correct in dismissing the other universe as fictitious. Yet, it’s also plausible that Peacemaker doesn’t actually govern this universe, considering the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, a significant location for various beings including one who may hold a grudge against Peacemaker.

Every time Peacemaker steps into the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, an alien emerges from a door, discarding a dead rodent in an incinerator, attempting friendly interactions. These interactions seldom go smoothly, leading to Peacemaker shouting profanities at the extraterrestrial. There are certain aliens in DC universe known for their intelligence and mental manipulation, like the Dominators who crafted a utopia for Arrowverse heroes in “Invasion!” only to imprison them. Although this alien doesn’t resemble a Dominator, it’s not impossible that the creature is frustrated with Peacemaker and using mind games as retaliation.

Peaceaker is streaming on HBO Max.
