10 Most Tragic Origins in DC Comics (& #4 Is Always Cruelly Overlooked)

Tragedy is central to the stories of heroes and villains alike. DC Comics has consistently used this idea, giving many of its most famous characters heartbreaking backstories. Both heroes and villains often wear their costumes as a way to deal with terrible losses and trauma. These tragedies deeply shape who they become, influencing their paths as either saviors or wrongdoers. For heroes, overcoming hardship can strengthen their resolve and motivate them to protect others. For villains, a tragic past can offer an explanation for their actions, even eliciting some understanding or sympathy.

Many DC Comics characters have been deeply affected by trauma and loss. Some overcome their painful pasts to become heroes, while others let it fuel their villainy. Here are ten of the most heartbreaking origin stories DC has ever created.

10) Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn, originally Dr. Harleen Quinzeel, was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who was manipulated by her patient, the Joker. He cleverly presented himself as a victim and painted Batman as the villain, leading Harley to fall in love with him. She helped him escape and became his girlfriend and partner in crime, but her mental state deteriorated as a result. Despite her devotion, the Joker never reciprocated her feelings and subjected her to years of emotional and physical abuse. Eventually, Harley found the strength to break free from this harmful and controlling relationship.

9) Batman

Batman’s story is famous for its heartbreaking beginning. One night, after going to the movies, the Wayne family took a shortcut through a dangerous part of town. There, a robber named Joe Chill shot and killed Bruce Wayne’s parents, Thomas and Martha, right before his eyes. This terrible event deeply traumatized Bruce and motivated him to become Batman, dedicating his life to fighting crime in Gotham City. Despite years of training and becoming a symbol of fear for criminals, Bruce never fully healed from the trauma and continues to struggle with anger and guilt over his parents’ deaths.

8) Bane

Bane’s life was filled with hardship from the very beginning. He was born into imprisonment, forced to serve his father’s sentence in the brutal PeƱa Duro prison in Santa Prisca. His mother died when he was six, and he survived a fall from three stories, waking from a coma with a fierce instinct for survival – his first act was to defend himself against an attacker. Over the years, he honed his body and mind, becoming the most powerful figure within the prison. Eventually, Bane escaped and turned his attention to conquering Gotham City.

7) Mr. Freeze

Mr. Freeze, originally known as Victor Fries, has a famously sad story. He was once a scientist who specialized in freezing things, and when his wife, Nora, became seriously ill, he froze her, hoping to keep her alive until he could find a cure. When his employers tried to stop his research because it was expensive, a struggle ensued. Victor was accidentally exposed to dangerous chemicals and left for dead, but he survived-with a terrible consequence. He can no longer survive in normal temperatures and must wear a special suit to stay alive. Driven by his love for Nora, Victor continues to search for a cure, and he won’t let anything stand in his way, no matter the personal cost.

6) Pariah

Pariah came from another universe and became obsessed with studying the Multiverse, using a powerful device fueled by antimatter. This caught the attention of the Anti-Monitor, a supremely powerful being from an antimatter universe, who then destroyed Pariah’s entire universe and set out to eliminate all others. Luckily, a good version of the Anti-Monitor, known as the Monitor, saved Pariah from the destruction of his home.

The Monitor, determined to both follow the Anti-Monitor and punish Pariah for his involvement with antimatter, inflicted a terrible fate on the scientist. He forced Pariah to witness the destruction of countless universes as the Anti-Monitor’s unstoppable antimatter wave swept across reality. Even after the Anti-Monitor was defeated, the emotional scars from this ordeal remained profound and unimaginable.

5) Red Hood

Jason Todd, also known as Red Hood, is frequently seen as Batman’s biggest regret. He was a street kid Batman took in and trained as the second Robin. In the famous “Death in the Family” storyline, the Joker kidnapped Robin and brutally beat him. Before Batman could save Jason, the Joker detonated a bomb, killing him.

Jason Todd didn’t stay dead. Years later, he mysteriously returned to life, but the experience deeply traumatized him. Fueled by anger at Batman for letting the Joker live, he transformed into the Red Hood, a vigilante who uses guns. He initially sought to prove Batman’s methods were weak and even tried to destroy him. While they eventually repaired their relationship, Jason has never truly healed from being killed and brought back to life.

4) Crazy Jane

Kay Challis, better known as Crazy Jane, experienced a deeply traumatic childhood. From the age of five, she was repeatedly abused by her father. As a way to cope, she developed 64 distinct personalities. This eventually led to a diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder and confinement in a mental asylum. Later, when Earth was hit by a gene-bomb from the alien Dominators, each of Kay’s personalities manifested a unique superpower. While she found acceptance with the Doom Patrol, the lasting effects of her trauma and mental instability continue to profoundly impact her.

3) Supergirl

Okay, so the story begins with Superman’s familiar origin – sent to Earth as a baby after Krypton exploded. But this isn’t *that* story. This is about Kara Zor-El, his cousin. Unlike Superman, Kara was a teenager when Krypton went boom, and she actually *saw* it happen. Her parents managed to launch her into space, hoping she’d survive, but she got caught in a wormhole and was frozen in time for years. When she finally arrived on Earth, imagine her shock – her baby cousin was a fully grown man, while she hadn’t aged at all! It’s a really poignant setup, and the film does a good job of showing how she’s still grappling with the loss of everything she knew and trying to find her place on a planet that feels completely foreign.

2) Starfire

Starfire, known as Koriand’r, is often seen as one of DC Comics’ most cheerful heroes, but she has a surprisingly tragic past. As the princess of Tamaran, she endured constant torment from her older sister, Blackfire (Komand’r), who was driven by jealousy and cruelty. Blackfire repeatedly tried to kill Koriand’r, and later committed the ultimate betrayal by aiding the Citadel Empire in conquering Tamaran.

Koriand’r’s father, King Myand’r, surrendered her to the Citadel as part of a peace agreement. For six years, she was held as a slave and endured torture and abuse. Later, the Citadel sold her to the Psions, who subjected her to dangerous experiments, attempting to discover the limits of her energy absorption. Koriand’r eventually escaped and found refuge on Earth. Though her own family had betrayed her, she found a new family with the Teen Titans.

1) Martian Manhunter

J’onn J’onzz, also known as Martian Manhunter, suffered a terrible loss when his entire family and everyone he loved were killed in a genocide planned by his brother, Ma’alefa’ak. J’onn had lived a happy life with his wife and daughter, but Ma’alefa’ak was rejected by Martian society because he couldn’t use telepathy. Driven by this rejection, Ma’alefa’ak unleashed a deadly virus called the H’ronmeer’s Curse. If a Martian caught the virus and tried to use their telepathic powers, they would immediately burst into flames.

J’onn experienced unimaginable horror when he was forced to watch his wife and daughter die in a fire, their screams echoing in his mind. He then fought Ma’alefa’ak, and though he thought he’d defeated him, Ma’alefa’ak had only pretended to die. Even achieving his revenge didn’t bring J’onn any peace. He spent centuries wandering his desolate home world until, by chance, a human scientist teleported him to Earth. Unfortunately, J’onn’s shocking appearance caused the scientist to have a fatal heart attack. Despite this tragic event, J’onn saw his arrival on Earth as a miracle and decided to make it his new home. Witnessing the destruction of his entire race, and the agonizing death of his wife and child, is a trauma that no being should ever have to suffer.
