As a huge movie fan, I was totally blown away when Jordan Peele, known for his hilarious work on Key & Peele, jumped into directing. He quickly became one of the most exciting filmmakers around! Get Out was his breakout film – critics and audiences loved it. Since then, he’s not only continued directing, but he’s also become a really interesting producer, especially in the horror genre. His newest project as a producer is Him, a psychological thriller about football, starring Marlon Wayans as an older quarterback mentoring a young up-and-comer. It sounds really intriguing!
The new movie *Him* is being released at a great time, with both college and professional football seasons in full swing. Jordan Peele’s involvement as a producer is being heavily promoted, and combined with the widespread popularity of football, this could lead to strong ticket sales. Because the movie didn’t cost a lot to make, it has a good chance of doing well in theaters.
What Is Him‘s Production Budget?
Horror films consistently perform well in theaters, often because they’re made with relatively low budgets, making it easier to earn a profit. The new film *Him* follows this trend, costing $27 million to produce. This is similar to the $25 million budget for 2021’s *Candyman*, which was also produced by Jordan Peele. It’s a bit more expensive than Peele’s earlier film, *Us*, which cost $20 million to make.
Typically, a movie needs to earn twice its production budget to cover all its costs. This is because the stated budget doesn’t include the money spent on marketing and getting the movie into theaters. Therefore, the movie *Him* probably needs to make around $54 million worldwide to cover everything it cost to make and release.
Can Him Become a Box Office Success?
Current predictions suggest the new horror film *Him* will earn between $15 and $18 million in its opening weekend in the US. While horror movies have been surprisingly successful this year, it’s uncertain if *Him* will follow suit. September has already brought several horror releases, including the record-breaking *The Conjuring: Last Rites* and *The Long Walk*. Though *The Long Walk* didn’t perform exceptionally well at the box office, it received positive reviews. This means horror and thriller fans have had plenty of options lately, which might affect demand for *Him*. However, a $15-18 million opening would still be a solid result, given the film’s budget.
Okay, so the real test for *Him* isn’t just its opening weekend – it’s whether people keep going back. Because things are about to get *really* competitive at the box office. A bunch of big, Oscar-hopeful movies like *One Battle After Another* and *The Smashing Machine* are coming out, and they all have huge stars attached. Honestly, I’m a little worried *Him* might get lost in the shuffle and its box office run could be shorter than we’d hoped.
While *Him* might not perform strongly overseas, it’s likely to earn most of its revenue in the United States. Although the NFL has expanded internationally, football remains most popular in America. The film’s specific subject matter may limit its global appeal. International box office success can be very important, as *The Conjuring: Last Rites* is expected to be 2025’s top-earning horror movie thanks to its strong performance outside of the US.
While the *Candyman* film, which Jordan Peele produced, earned $77.4 million globally, it’s not a direct comparison to *Him*. *Candyman* was part of an established horror series with existing fans, and it was released when fewer new movies were coming out as theaters were still recovering from the pandemic. *Him*, on the other hand, is a completely original film competing against some major releases. It faces a challenge, but if it performs well, it could potentially reach $54 million in earnings.
