The first puzzle you encounter on the Shrine Path in Silent Hill f is the Altar. It seems straightforward – you have five pedestals and five unusual items to place on them – but how challenging it is depends on the difficulty level you’ve chosen. It could be a simple introduction to the game’s puzzles, or a frustrating obstacle.
At first, I spent a long time looking at the puzzle, thinking there was a hidden trick to figuring it out. But once I understood what needed to be done, it became much easier. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to solve the Shrine Path Altar puzzle in Story Mode, Hard Mode, and Lost in the Fog, so you can continue your journey through Fox Mask’s dream.
Shrine Path Altar Puzzle Solution (All Difficulties)
This is where your real exploration of the strange world of Silent Hill starts. You’ll need to place five special items on five stands, and the order you put them on matters to move forward.
The offerings are always the same, regardless of difficulty:
- Robe/Dress — small doll robe with plum blossom design
- Dead Rat — wrapped in leafy kudzu-like strands
- Clay Pot/Urn — has a chrysanthemum motif on the base
- Branches/Fan-like sticks — symbolically linked with pine
- Chopsticks Box/Fan — decorated with a bamboo design

The clues on the pedestals adjust based on the difficulty level you select. They can be as straightforward as matching symbols, or as challenging as the complex puzzles found in Silent Hill.
NOTE: I’ll describe pedestal positions using the following:
- Front row (closest to you): Front-Left (FL) — Front-Middle (FM) — Front-Right (FR)
- Back row (farther from you): Back-Left (BL) — Back-Right (BR)
Story Mode Solution — Quick and Simple
Story Mode mainly involves recognizing visual patterns. You’ll find each item has a cord or decoration that corresponds to the designs carved or painted on the pedestals.
Place (by pedestal):
- FL: Robe / Dress
- FM: Urn / Pot
- FR: Chopsticks box / Fan
- BL: Dead Rat
- BR: Dried Fish
Left→Right reading (FL → FM → FR → BL → BR):
Robe → Urn → Chopsticks → Rat → Dried Fish
Tip: you usually don’t need to zoom — compare knot shapes and simple symbols and you’ll be fine.

Hard Mode Solution — Look for Subtle Motifs
The designs on the bases of items have been updated to feature Japanese plants. To find them, look closely – the designs are small and may only be visible when you turn the item around.
Clues to look for:
- Urn = chrysanthemum (on the bottom)
- Chopsticks box = bamboo leaf design
- Dead rat = wrapped in big green leaves (kudzu)
- Robe = plum blossom pattern (look at the back/lower half)
- Dried fish = subtle pattern/pine-needle hint under the knot
Place (by pedestal):
- FL: Chopsticks box (Bamboo)
- FM: Urn / Pot (Chrysanthemum)
- FR: Dead Rat (Kudzu)
- BL: Dried Fish (Pine)
- BR: Robe / Dress (Plum)
Left→Right reading:
Chopsticks → Urn → Rat → Dried Fish → Robe
Hard forces you to actually study the props — rotate them and inspect the small drawings.

Lost in the Fog Mode Solution — The Riddle Version
On Lost in the Fog the pedestals are blank. The only clue is the journal entry:
Kudzu, a highly respected leader, married Pine. Plum, popular and the life of the party, married Bamboo. Chrysanthemum, remaining single, studied with Kudzu and became renowned as the “Sage of the East.”
Interpretation, step-by-step:
- Plum = loved, “at the center” → robe (plum blossoms) goes Front-Middle.
- Chrysanthemum (no mate) is “studying under Kudzu” → urn (chrysanthemum) goes Front-Right (east / lower right).
- The thing “under Kudzu” means the dead rat (wrapped in leaves) goes Back-Right (above the urn).
- Pine is wed to Kudzu → the item with pine needles (dried fish) goes Back-Left.
- That leaves Bamboo → chopsticks box goes Front-Left, beside Plum (robe).
Final Lost-in-the-Fog layout (by pedestal):
- FL: Chopsticks box (Bamboo)
- FM: Robe (Plum)
- FR: Urn (Chrysanthemum)
- BL: Dried Fish (Pine)
- BR: Dead Rat (Kudzu)
Left→Right reading:
Chopsticks → Robe → Urn → Dried Fish → Rat
This is the inference puzzle version — read the tiny story and map plants to items.

Quick Cheat Sheet (All Difficulties)
- Story: Robe → Urn → Chopsticks → Rat → Dried Fish
- Hard: Chopsticks → Urn → Rat → Dried Fish → Robe
- Lost in the Fog: Chopsticks → Robe → Urn → Dried Fish → Rat
Troubleshooting & micro tips
- If the altar doesn’t react, make sure the item is placed fully on the pedestal (some placements can feel fiddly).
- Can’t spot motifs? Rotate the item and check the underside/back — chrysanthemum and plum details can be tiny.
- Guides call items by different names (Fan, Branches, Dress, Pot). Use the appearance list above to match items reliably.
