Fans of Rebecca Yarros’s popular novel, *Fourth Wing*, have some exciting news about the upcoming Amazon TV series, despite a recent hurdle. In July, the show lost its first showrunner, Moira Walley-Beckett, who is known for creating *Anne With an E*. However, the series is moving forward again with a new showrunner who has a background in fantasy television.
I just read in *Variety* that Meredith Averill, who worked on *Locke & Key*, is now running the show for that new romantasy adaptation! It’s been in the works since October 2023, and Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society are producing it. As far as I know, though, it’s still being developed – no official series order yet, and they haven’t announced any actors who’ll be in it.
Fourth Wing Could Be Prime Video’s Big Fantasy Hit
The newest developments regarding Amazon’s adaptation of *Fourth Wing* are encouraging for the platform’s venture into the fantasy genre, and could potentially lead to a major success. Based on Rebecca Yarros’ popular *Empyrean* series, *Fourth Wing* takes place in the dangerous world of Basgiath College, where students train to become Scribes, Infantry, Healers, or the elite Dragon Riders. The series centers on Violet Sorrengail, a Rider who must fight to survive against incredible challenges while also discovering hidden truths that could determine the fate of the world.
When it first came out, the book *Fourth Wing* became incredibly popular, largely thanks to social media, and quickly resonated with a wide audience, becoming a significant part of pop culture. Since then, two sequels have been released-*Iron Flame* in November 2023 and *Onyx Storm* this January-with two more on the way. Excitement for the series remains high, which is great news for Amazon’s upcoming adaptation. While Amazon has successfully adapted other fantasy series like *The Wheel of Time*, *Fourth Wing* offers a unique advantage: it’s both currently popular and has plenty of source material. This combination positions the series for potentially massive success.
Despite the excitement, adapting *Fourth Wing* into a series won’t be easy. The show is still in early stages, with no actors cast yet, and getting the right cast is crucial given how popular the *Empyrean* books already are. Other popular fantasy romance series have struggled to become successful TV shows. For example, Hulu spent years trying to adapt Sarah J. Maas’s *A Court of Thorns and Roses*, but the project was ultimately cancelled earlier this year. Since *A Court of Thorns and Roses* is such a huge series in this genre, its failure creates some uncertainty, and it’s yet to be seen if Amazon can make *Fourth Wing* a success.
Fourth Wing is currently in development at Prime Video.
