Subnautica 2 Team Says Krafton is Co-Publishing, “Still Very Much Helping” With the Game’s Launch

I’m so excited! Subnautica 2 finally has an early access date after being delayed for a while, and they just dropped this awesome cinematic trailer to get us all hyped. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but it looks like Unknown Worlds, the creators, won their legal fight with Krafton. That means the Steam page now shows Unknown Worlds as the sole developer and publisher, which is great to see!

This understandably led to some confusion, with people even wondering if the studio had separated from Krafton. However, Scott MacDonald, a creative media producer, and Anthony Gallegos, the design lead, recently explained the situation to Eurogamer.

Gallegos explained that while they don’t have a complete understanding of the Steam page details, they are co-publishing the game with Krafton, meaning Krafton is now a publisher again.

MacDonald explained that they’re collaborating with Krafton on all marketing materials as part of a co-publishing agreement. He acknowledged that something related to this partnership gained more attention on Steam than intended, but confirmed Krafton is still actively supporting the game’s launch.

Someone from public relations on the call confirmed this, so that’s the current situation. It’s still unclear how much influence this will have on the game’s development, particularly since a court recently gave the reinstated CEO, Ted Gill, control over the initial launch.

Currently, Subnautica 2 is scheduled to release in early access on May 14th for Xbox Series X/S and PC, and will be included with Game Pass from day one. The initial release includes several new environments, four-player co-op, and lots of items to craft. Unknown Worlds plans to add even more content through future updates, which will eventually lead to a price increase from the current $30 when the early access period is over.

Reaching the final version of the game will take a significant amount of time – the developer estimates two to three years, based on their past projects. They also emphasize their commitment to finishing Subnautica 2 and making it the best it can be. The sequel will be set on a new planet, and the developers promise even more complex and immersive alien life, with players able to explore to greater depths than ever before.
