The DC Universe will be back in action next month with the return of Kara Zor-El, following Milly Alcock’s first appearance as Superman in 2025.
Director Craig Gillespie recently told Collider that the upcoming Supergirl movie is nearly finished with post-production. He mentioned the film’s runtime is approximately the same as Cruella, “close to an hour and 50 minutes with credits.” If accurate, this would make it the shortest film so far in James Gunn’s DC Universe franchise.
Gillespie shared that the project is nearly complete, expressing his excitement for audiences to see it. They’re finishing up the special effects and completing the final audio mix this week, meaning they’re very close to the finish line. When asked about a potential post-credits scene for the Supergirl movie, he declined to offer any hints.
The new Superman movie, starring David Corenswet, runs for 1 hour and 10 minutes, while Supergirl, with Jenna Alcock, is just 20 minutes shorter. The Supergirl film, directed by Drew Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, is based on an eight-issue comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, originally published between 2021 and 2022. Even though the movie is making some changes to the source material, the most important thing is that it captures the spirit of the original comic.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about the news coming out of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow project! The biggest surprise for me is definitely Jason Momoa joining the cast as Lobo. He wasn’t part of the original comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which is a cool change. What’s even more interesting is that, as far as we know, he’s the first actor from the old DCEU Justice League to be officially moving over to the new DCU in a completely different role. It feels like a fresh start for some of these beloved characters!
It’s currently unknown if Supergirl will be the shortest film in the first chapter of the DC Universe, “Gods and Monsters.” DC Studios is also releasing Clayface later this year on October 23rd. The runtime for this R-rated horror film, which introduces a classic Batman villain into James Gunn’s franchise, hasn’t been announced yet.
After 2026, it’s unclear when Supergirl (Kara) will reappear in the DC Universe, as DC hasn’t announced any plans beyond her upcoming movie. But, since she’s set to be a major character in James Gunn’s shared universe, fans likely won’t have to wait long to see her again after this summer.
James Gunn is currently filming Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. While Naia Alcock hasn’t officially been confirmed to star, many fans speculate she could appear alongside her on-screen cousin. Several actors from other DC Universe projects are already involved, including Aaron Pierre from Lanterns.
Supergirl is scheduled to land in theaters on June 26.
