Although Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, it still hasn’t been released to a broader audience. Nearly two years later, the film remains delayed, and recent news about its release has been discouraging.
A source at Warner Bros. told World of Reel that a theatrical release for the second Horizon movie in 2026 isn’t currently planned. The project is largely on hold because of legal troubles surrounding the film and its star, Kevin Costner. Last year, the United Costume Corporation sued for $350,000 in unpaid costume costs, and a stunt performer also sued the filmmakers, alleging an unscripted and unwanted sexual assault scene. These legal cases are still ongoing.
Kevin Costner Hasn’t Given Up on Finishing the Series
Although the recent news is disappointing for Kevin Costner, his movie series, Horizon: An American Saga, isn’t over yet. He still intends to make the final two films. Over the past year, Costner has reportedly visited Saudi Arabia multiple times, presenting his ideas for Chapter 4 and seeking additional financial support.
Kevin Costner is reportedly planning a $100 million film studio in Utah, which would be a major boost for his Horizon project. However, he’d still need additional funding to complete the planned two sequels.
Horizon: An American Saga Found Its Audience on Streaming
Despite a significant investment of around $100 million (including $38 million of Kevin Costner’s personal funds) in production and marketing, Horizon: An American Saga didn’t perform well in theaters. The first film, released in 2024, earned less than $39 million worldwide. As a result, the release of Chapter 2, originally planned for shortly after the first film, has been delayed.
Although Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 didn’t do well in theaters, it performed surprisingly well on streaming services. It reached No. 3 on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10 list shortly after its release last year, and now it’s becoming available on Prime Video on May 23rd. A strong performance on Prime Video could help the series gain traction, but it’s still uncertain whether Chapter 2 or the other planned sequels will ever be made.
